A part -time permanent opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic, motivated person with a desire to develop their clinical skills in paediatric diabetes to join our proactive team at The Royal Surrey Hospital (RSH).

We are looking for somebody with paediatric diabetes experience. We are looking for someone who is proactive and has the initiative to develop a service to complement the paediatric diabetes MDT. 

The Dietetic Department at The Royal Surrey Hospital has an active audit and research culture, promoting clinical effectiveness in patient care. You will join a forward thinking and innovative dietetic team, which undertakes the training of A, B and C placement students, and is involved in teaching at the University of Surrey as well as supporting students with dissertation projects. This is an excellent opportunity in a supportive environment where you will be encouraged to develop both personally and professionally.

Main duties of the job

The Royal Surrey looks after over 120 children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes. The Diabetes team comprises of three paediatricians' with a special interest in diabetes, two specialist nurses and a psychologist. This post is part of the service supporting the 'Best practice tariff' process. This role is one of four paediatric posts within our department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide a high quality diabetes service for paediatrics in line with the Best Practice Tariff guidelines

The post holder will be responsible for delivering specialist paediatric diabetes advice to patients, families and staff. The delivery of this service will predominantly take place in outpatient clinics and at ward level. The post holder will also support the clinical supervision of the paediatric dietetic team and provide dietetic input to relevant MDTs, and support for other Health Professionals in the Trust and surrounding Healthcare Units

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Dietetics or equivalent and registration with HCPC
Desirable criteria
  • Member of the British Dietetics Association
  • Membership of BDA specialist group eg Paediatric DSG

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience working at a senior level in a range of different clinical settings
  • Previous clinical experience in paediatrics including diabetes
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience managing other dietetic staff
  • Experience of teaching, training and / or lecturing
  • Good understanding of the relationship between diet and insulin in type 1 diabetes including use of Carbohydrate counting & Glycaemic index in day to day management
  • Understanding of medicine management and optimisation in the context of insulin dose adjustment advice and the role of the dietitian without a prescribing qualification
  • Good understanding of insulin pump therapy including hybrid closed loop systems and the dietary advice for these systems with documented CPD certification.
Desirable criteria
  • Post graduate qualification(s)
  • Recognised post graduate qualification(s) in Paediatric Diabetes and or signed off BDA band 6 training guide in paediatric diabetes
  • Experience and / or trained to deliver Diabetes structured education such as DESMOND, DAFNE or equivalent
