Digital Clinical Fellow - Histopathology

Job overview

This 12 month post is a Digital Clinical Fellow post in Histopathology based at and employed by the Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford as part of Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services with Frimley Park Hospital/Wexham Park Hospital, Ashford and St Peter’s Hospital and Royal Berkshire Hospital. 

Any applicant who is unable for personal reasons to work full time will be eligible to be considered for the post: if such a person is appointed modification of the job content will be discussed on a personal basis in consultation with the Educational Supervisor, SpRs colleagues, Lead Histopathologist and Consultants.

Main duties of the job

The post holder, with the existing Consultants, StRs and LAS’s, will provide a histology service to Health Authority Commissioners, GPs and clinicians at the hospitals as well as to the Jarvis Breast Screening Centre. The duties will mainly include cutting up and macroscopy of the surgical pathology specimens. The post holder will be on the trainee cut up rota. Some reporting of surgical specimens is likely to be included (under supervision) depending on the experience of the post holder. The post holder is encouraged to participate in some of the clinicopathological and MDT.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will do equivalent of two days of clinical and equivalent of three days of digital pathology work.

 Digital Duties:

The digital trainee will be based at the Royal Surrey NHS Foundation Trust, supervised by Dr Heidi Helin, for a period of 12 months.

 The aim of the digital fellow is to work with the department to:

1.    Help validate the digital whole slide scanning and reporting using the 3D Histech digital slide scanner for example through preparation of validation slides sets. Present the findings by preparing publications and presentations for national and international meetings. 

2.    Help accelerate the process of digital reporting within the department by assisting other staff members in transitioning to reporting on digital platform.

3.    Help develop and deliver a workflow for the digital reporting in the Berkshire and Surrey Pathology Services Director through the Specialty and Digital Leads, including preparing the departmental digital pathology documentations and SOPs.

4.    Attend regular digital pathology laboratory meetings.

5.    To work with the consultants to digitize their educational cases. Using these cases the post holder is expected to prepare educational slide sets as well as mock exam sets with annotations and answers.
