JOB PURPOSE
The Corporate Practice Development Team work across the Trust to promote the
development of nursing staff and facilitate continuous improvement in the culture of care.


 JOB SUMMARY
The postholder will
support the professional development of all nursing staff.
 support the development of clinical competence and evidence-based practice to 
ensure best possible patient outcomes and experience. 
 assist in the delivery of education programmes and act as a role model/ supporting 
nurses in the clinical environment.
 work closely and under the direction of a Senior Practice Development Sister/Charge 
Nurse.

Main duties of the job

Support and Development of Nursing Staff:
To assist in the provision of a twelve-month Preceptorship programme for nurses who are new
to the NMC register.
To support Registered Nurses, ‘return to practice’ nurses, Overseas Nurses, Health Care
Assistants, Associate Practitioners and student nurses as required.
Under the direction of the Senior Practice Development Sister/Charge Nurse, to work closely
with the nurse managers, ward sisters/charge nurses and pre-registration clinical placement
facilitator to ensure timely and appropriate course structure and delivery.
To work supernumerary as necessary on identified wards, depending on teaching and other
commitments. To act as a role model, provide clinical support and guidance with the
fundamentals of nursing.
To maintain timely and accurate records of nurses who enter into the Preceptorship
Programme or the Overseas Nursing Programme including outcomes.
To evaluate outcomes of activities and to provide timely reports as requested.
To liaise with ward sister/charge nurse and Matron in terms of any practice performance issues
or concerns and assist to develop actions plans as necessary.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Paediatric Practice Development Nurse
Band 6
Fixed term/Secondment for 1 year
30 hrs per week. 
Royal Surrey County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust Paediatric Department are looking to recruit.
Are you a motivated, enthusiastic nurse who enjoys teaching and developing high standards of 
clinical care? 
We have a fixed term/ secondment opportunity to join our practice development team working 
within the Children’s Unit and the Paediatric Emergency Department. As a practice development 
nurse you will improve standards of patient care and safety and support nursing staff in their clinical 
practice, ensuring delivery of the highest standards of clinical care within our services.
Main duties of the job
You will provide the following services in conjunction with the Senior Practice Development Sister:
Practice supervision and assessment of new and existing staff through education and clinical skillsbased training in a variety of locations, empowering them to develop their own evidenced based 
best practice.
Assist in the development of new learning materials and on-going review of existing resources to 
ensure they meet the required learning outcomes.
Attend, organise and contribute to tutorials, study and induction days, running workshops and 
cascading updates to the wider team
Assist in the delivery of immersive training and support of International recruitment programme 
utilising the support and skills of the Children’s department and the Practice development team.
This role will span 2 key areas, Hascombe ward and Paediatric Emergency Department.
Hascombe Ward is a 23 bed general paediatric ward and is co-located alongside our Paediatric 
Assessment Unit at the Royal Surrey Hospital in Guildford. We provide care to children of all ages and 
their families with a wide variety of medical and surgical needs (ENT, Maxillo-facial, Ophthalmology, 
General surgery, and Orthopaedics). We are a designated level 2 Paediatric Oncology Shared Care Unit 
(POSCU) providing shared care with the Royal Marsden. 
Our Paediatric Emergency department provides services for children and young people from 0-16yrs 
offering immediate care to a broad range of presentations. We provide care for families needing only 
a few hours of treatment to those requiring admission the paediatric department. Work is 
unpredictable and can offer a challenging and fast paced environment relying heavily on team work

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Paediatric Registered Nurse with current NMC registration
  • Mentorship/Practice Assessor qualification or equivalent
  • Demonstrate post qualification or equivalent experience in nursing studies, which equates to sufficient clinical expertise

Knowledge & Experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate up to date clinical credibility/ competence
  • Evidence in changing practice and project management
  • Evidence of commitment to CPD
