BIOMEDICAL SCIENTISTS - HISTOPATHOLOGY
Base - Surrey Histology Hub in Guildford (with occasional travel to other sites across Surrey)
37.5 hours per week - flexible working options considered

We have recently extended our service and are looking for more people now to join our fantastic team. Are you a HCPC registered? Do have 3-4 years post –registration NHS histology experience? We have a modern and spacious laboratory and of course, you’ll be joining our friendly and supportive team.
What we can offer:
• We will support in ensuring you can progress by supporting you in completing the IBMS Specialist Diploma and completion of the specialist portfolio.
• We will train you to undertake dissection to category B and C in a sub-specialised manner, under the guidance of our Advanced Practitioner in Histological Dissection.
• We have a dedicated Histology Training Officer with extensive and recent experience of IBMS Specialist Portfolio completion.
• There are opportunities to study for online MSc modules via BioMed Online once trained to the appropriate level and as funding is released
Main duties of the job
The post will be largely based at the RSCH in Guildford, with occasional rotation to one of the other BSPS Surrey Histopathology sites. Please note for Band 6 post we will require at least 3 years post-registration, UK histology experiences with in depth knowledge of histology processes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To contribute to the delivery and evolution of the Histopathology service to all BSPS sites.
The post holder will be a HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist with well-developed specialist knowledge and skills appropriate to their Pathology service. They will be required to work unsupervised (including on shift or on-call systems where appropriate and necessary), either as part of a team or independently, receiving, analysing and reporting specimens for Pathological investigations. The post holder will be required to perform a complex range of tests using dedicated scientific equipment on all samples received, including high-risk specimens, i.e., those from HIV and hepatitis B positive patients. They will be required to interpret and report results in accordance with agreed service protocols to clinicians and nursing staff in primary and secondary care. They will also be required to ensure their appropriate continual professional development and evidence such, in accordance with the requirements of the Health Care Professions Council (HCPC), and train and supervise less experienced staff as directed by their line manager.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- IBMS accredited BSc biomedical Science.
- IBMS Specialist Portfolio in Cellular Pathology, or equivalent laboratory experience
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Wide experience (3+ years post registration) of traditional and modern histopathological techniques including embedding, microtomy, special staining, frozen sections and IHC.
- Experience of a busy histology laboratory
- Experience of troubleshoot histology analyzer e.g. cassette printer, tissue process, H&E staining machine, IHC machine
- Internal Quality assurance of H&E, Immunocytochemistry, and special stain
Desirable criteria
- Experience of participating in the training and supervision of less experienced staff
- Knowledge of quality management systems
