Job overview

We are looking to recruit a part time Health Care Assistant to support the clinical team within our busy, friendly Radiology Department. 

This is a varied role where you will be working in a busy environment juggling the different demands typical of a Health Care Assistant within this specialty.

We require you to be friendly and hard working with excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, and have the ability to manage time and plan/prioritise work efficiently and effectively.

You will contribute to maintaining our high standards of hygiene, infection control and a safe environment in compliance with the Trust policies and procedures.

Main duties of the job

You will work within the radiology department, ultrasound department and breast imaging; assisting radiologists, sonographers and radiographers with procedures and contributing to the smooth running of the department.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post holder will provide nursing care under the guidance and supervision of a registered nurse. Assist with administration and non-nursing duties working within the radiology department, ultrasound department, breast imaging and fluoroscopy to provide an efficient and effective service.


3.    KEY RESULT AREAS/MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

•    Liaise with medical, radiology and nursing staff and technical and ancillary staff throughout the Trust to ensure the delivery of high quality patient care.
•    Observe and apply Trust policies, departmental and nursing protocols and procedures.
•    Help to manage patient flow during sessions and coordinate the in-patients as required. May be required to transfer patients to and from wards and clinics.
•    Assist the sonographer /radiologist and radiographer during examinations in radiology, ultrasound , fluoroscopy and breast imaging to ensure efficient work flow
•    Check patient details on request form and check that any special instructions have been carried out. 
•    Ensure clinical rooms are prepared prior to the start of clinical sessions anticipating the transducer and preparation requirements for each examination.
•    Assist patients to prepare for their examination. Ensure patients are wearing gowns etc if appropriate and that their valuables are kept safely. To reassure and help to explain procedures to patients. Bring patients to and from examination room.
•    Assist the patients after their examination ( e.g. Contact a particular doctor , expedite  an  X Ray , go to a clinic .etc )
•    Assists with the filing of reports and request forms and assists other clerical duties as required maintaining confidentiality at all times.
•    Maintain knowledge of CRIS in order to search database, accurate data entry of request forms and attend patients.
•    Assist with reception activities and varied scheduling tasks. 
•    Assist in collation of statistical information.
•    Participate in on-going audits
•    Ensure patients waiting for examinations are kept informed of any delays or relevant information regarding their appointment. Ensure and maintain a patient-centred, quality focused approach to all aspects of work.
•    Ensure that all infection control standards are adhered to and high levels of cleanliness are maintained i.e. equipment and environment.
•    Chaperones when required maintaining privacy and dignity at all times.
•    After suitable training and assessment, assists with clinical procedures under the supervision of nursing staff. Assists in the assessment, planning and evaluation of nursing care.
•    Performs basic care under the direction of a nurse and be able to administer and seek advice on the appropriate first aid measures in an emergency.
•    In the interests of health and safety, the Health Care Assistant should only undertake manual handing of patients after having received adequate training and instruction.
•    Ensure the safe transport of equipment as required.
•    May be required to assist in other areas within the radiology department.
•    Attends in-service training and other annual training programmes, as required.
•    Reports incidents using online incident reporting system.
•    Report all defects, breakages and safety hazards promptly to so that the appropriate action can be taken.
•    The post holder is required to be flexible and prepared to meet changing needs to comply with the service.   
•    Carries out any duties as requested by the Radiology Services Manager/Radiology Sister/Modality Manager.

Essential criteria
  • GSCE or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ in Health related area

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Ability to accurately file
  • Experience of providing excellent customer service
  • Previous experience in patient contact position
Desirable criteria
  • Experience or working within an administrative role
  • Knowledge and experience of using CRIS database
  • Knowledge of acute hospital
