Job overview

Clinical leadership and team working leading in our 38 bedded unit.

The role involves the co-ordination, allocation and effective management of patient flow in and out of MSSU, taking patients from the emergency department to facilitate flow through all acute areas.

The role will incorporate liaising with other members of the senior teams across emergency and acute medicine also  including site management therefore creative thinking, problem solving, conflict resolution and negotiation skills are essential. 

Main duties of the job

As a band 6 you will be providing high quality patient centred care to patients of all ages and backgrounds with a variety of medical conditions.

You will be expected to facilitate safe and timely discharges and monitor the flow of patients into and out of the department working closely with other members of the MDT. 

As a visible clinical nurse leader, you should promote teamwork within a multi professional environment. leading and ensuring planning and delivery of care is aligned to professional values of safety, compassion and respect. 

Advocate for patients safety in a safe environment, be confident to escalate concerns when required.

Be accountable for the administration and custody of medicines as per the Trust policy.

Report incidents promptly and take effective action. 

Act as an advocate for your patients. 

 Co-ordinate the patient journey.

Promote a culture of patient centred care

Role model for junior staff  leading by example. 

Undertake staff appraisals and support staff to develop potential. 

Acting up on behalf of the ward manager in their absence.  

Be proficient in Trust polices including Mental Capacity Act and DOLS. 

Motivate and support the learning and development of staff. 

Participate in own training where required. 

Support workforce planning daily and redeploy staff when required, monitoring trends. 

Work cooperatively with other when reviewing the ward. 

Support new ways of working

Seek opportunities for service, self or team development.

Nursing qualifications

Essential criteria
  • RGN level 1
  • Current NMC registration
  • ENB 998 Teaching and assessing course or equivalent Mentorship preparation course
  • Knowledge of the NSF’s for medicine.
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ D32 / A1 Assessors course
  • Degree level registration

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience at band 5/6 level and in mentoring/ assessing student nurses
  • Experience working in more than one area i.e., medical and surgical areas.
  • Experience working in an acute medical environment.
  • Teaching and supervising of junior staff
  • Effective working with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Working with PAS systems
  • Managing change
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of complex discharge planning
  • Awareness of care available in the community and their role
  • Awareness of how role relates to planning of safe discharge from hospital

Skills & Knowledge
