An exciting opportunity has arisen to work within the team of the Medical examiners office to assist in supporting the expansion of the service and impact on the care of bereaved families in the area.
The successful post holder will support medical examiners in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death within the hospital and community. They will be a point of contact and source of advice for bereaved next of kin, healthcare professionals, the coroner and registration services.
To co-ordinate and support the Trust medical examiners and medical examiners officers in their role in scrutinising the circumstances and causes of death. To be a point of contact and source of advice for healthcare professionals in relation to the medical examiners service and also coroner and registration services.
To support in the production of performance monitoring and reporting. The postholder will be responsible for the management and development of Bereavement Services within the Trust and will be required to develop and maintain an efficient sympathetic service to relatives after the death of a patient.
The postholder will be expected to oversee both offices and travel between sites in a cross-site capacity.

- Degree level or equivalent experience in any subject
Desirable criteria
- Completed difficult conversations course
Experience
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable experience working as a medical examiner’s officer in an NHS Acute Trust
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of training staff and colleagues
Skills & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to engage at all levels including senior clinicians/coroners etc.
- Knowledge of the Criminal Justice act 2009
- Understanding of the Coroners’ processes
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of Hospital Funerals
- Knowledge of the special requirements of the various faith groups with an awareness of equality and diversity issues surrounding death certification and arrangements
- Knowledge and understanding of medical terminology that enables informed discussions about causes/circumstances of death with bereaved families, clinicians, and families.
Applicant requirements
The postholder will have access to vulnerable people in the course of their normal duties and as such this post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (Amendment) (England and Wales) Order 2020 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service to check for any previous criminal convictions.
