Job overview

We invite applications for a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthesia, this post is based at Heatherwood and Wexham Park Hospitals. The successful candidate will be responsible for provision of anaesthesia in theatres including pre-operative assessment, post operative analgesia and follow up when indicated. The duties also include provision of long day cover during weekdays (Bleep Holder Anaesthetist) at the Heatherwood hospital. 

Description of Working Pattern

Job plan will be for 12 PAs with 11 DCC and 1 SPA. A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the Deputy Chief of Service on behalf of the Chief of Service and Medical Director within three months of appointment. With Heatherwood hospital being an elective hub, there is great impetus on day case procedures.

The job plan will primarily involve provision of anaesthesia for daytime elective theatre lists for various specialities including orthopaedics. There is also a significant component of Preoperative Anaesthetic assessment activities. This involves providing advice, reviewing notes, and running a pre-assessment clinic seeing patients face-to-face, collaborating with the pre-assessment nurses and consultants/ doctors from other specialities, liaising with GPs when patients require further pre-operative treatment, and follow up investigations that were ordered.

This is a 3 year fixed term post.

Main duties of the job

Bleep Holder Anaesthetist Rota: The successful candidate will join the bleep holder anaesthetist rota based at the Heatherwood Hospital. The BHA shift commences at 10.00 hrs and finishes at 22.00 hrs when all patients have been discharged from PACU. The BHA is contactable over the bleep phone till 22.00. This rota is only for the weekday daytime. There is no service over the weekends, nights and bank holidays. They are also involved in preoperative assessment of patients, pain ward rounds and trouble shooting in PACU and DSU in addition to providing support to theatres. The role would also entail facilitating the flow in theatres, supporting emergencies in theatre and assist with transfer of patients to the acute site.

Weekend Commitments: As part of the job plan, the post holder will be involved in 1 in 6 weekend (Saturday or Sunday) daytime trauma lists or obstetric on call activities. Individual interests such as obstetrics can also be accommodated.

There is no night time work involved as part of this job plan.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with the GMC
  • Post graduate qualification in Anaesthesia
  • Experience of working in the UK and NHS
Desirable criteria
  • Part 1 FRCA or equivalent
  • ALS/APLS
  • EDRA

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • A minimum of 5 years (or equivalent) postgraduate experience in anaesthesia
  • Broad general experience in anaesthesia including preoperative assessment.
  • Proficiency in regional anaesthesia and anaesthesia for joint arthroplasties
  • Sufficient organisational, communication, professional and personal skills to undertake the role of Specialty Doctor.
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced training / special interest in pre assessment, regional anaesthesia
  • Day case anaesthesia experience
  • Trauma anaesthesia
  • Experience in Obstetric Anaesthesia in the UK
  • Knowledge of organisation of the NHS
