Consultant Gastroenterologist

NHS Medical & Dental: Consultant

Job overview

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust (FHFT) has an outstanding reputation and a proud record of achievement. We have an ongoing commitment to improving the health and care services for the 900,000 people we serve across Berkshire, Hampshire, Surrey, and south Buckinghamshire.

We are looking for an enthusiastic colleague who will help develop our Gastroenterology and Hepatology Services. Our inpatient services are based at Wexham Park Hospital in Slough and outpatient services are available across Wexham Park Hospital, Heatherwood Hospital and some of our satellite sites which includes King Edwards VII Hospital in Windsor and St Marks Hospital in Maidenhead.

Main duties of the job

This job is for a Consultant Gastroenterologist. The job is a full-time post comprising of 10 Programmed Activities (PA’s) including the on call. Those wishing to work less than full time hours will be considered. We encourage those with a sub-specialty interest in ERCP to apply. There is also scope to develop the hepatology and IBD service further.

The Gastro bleed out of hours cover will be provided at Wexham Park. This is currently 1:7 basis with a view to change as more colleagues are recruited. The gastroenterology ward (3) is a 24 bedded unit with 6 side rooms and contains liver, IBD, nutrition and some general medical patients.

The trust has an ambition to deliver a 6/7 day endoscopy service.

Working for our organisation

Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust is committed to being an inclusive and disability confident employer and has been awarded the Gold for the Armed Forces Employment Recognition Scheme. We provide first class development opportunities for all staff and have a wide range of professional, management and leadership, and clinical skills training available.

Here at Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust, we know how important it is to have a healthy work life balance; this benefits not only individuals but the patients we care for too.

We encourage applications from people who wish to work on a flexible basis, recognising that flexibility may mean a range of different working patterns and hours, we do our utmost to work with our staff to meet their needs and the needs of our service and its users.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Weekly MDTs include Colorectal, Upper GI and HPB for malignancy as well as IBD. In addition, there is a weekly medical Grand Round and a journal club.

Gastroenterology consultants are not part of the GIM on call rota. We will provide weekend Gastro zone review combined with emergency GI bleeding provision on a 1:7 basis. The GI bleeding rota is supported by two fully trained endoscopy nurses who attend for out of hours emergencies.

The team are supported at Wexham by 4 IBD CNS, 2 hepatology CNS, 2 nutrition nurses, 1 IBD Coordinator and 1 Hepatology coordinator.

Frimley Health is proud of its high quality endoscopy services which are provided in a 5 roomed dedicated suite at Frimley, 2 brand new rooms in our unit at Heatherwood, where we offer pH, manometry and breath testing. We have 2 procedure rooms in Lady Sobell suite (in-patient and ERCP) and an additional 2 rooms in the new modular unit at Wexham. Services provided include capsule endoscopy, single balloon enteroscopy, HALO and EMR therapy to Barrett’s and early oesophageal cancers.

We are very well supported by our anaesthetic colleagues and have access to several weekly propofol lists, to support the complex hepatobiliary and luminal work (e.g. Spyglass).

We have recently appointed 2 clinical fellows for gastro and an endoscopy fellow to help develop and deliver our endoscopy services. Excitingly, we have recently applied as an endoscopy training centre using the new state of the art facility at Heatherwood Hospital.

A formal job plan will be agreed between the post holder and the Chief of Service. The Job Plan will then be reviewed at 3 months and then annually, following their Appraisal Meeting. It provides a clear schedule of commitments, both internal and external. In addition, it includes personal objectives, including details of links to wider service objectives, and details of support required by the consultant to fulfil the job plan and the objectives.
