Job overview

We are very excited to announce an Occupational Therapy  Level 6 apprenticeship trainee post at FHFT based at Wexham Park Hospital.

This is a developmental role. The trainee will work towards the completion of an Occupational Therapy apprenticeship programme to enable them to become HCPC registered and able to apply for a band 5 Occupational Therapy role. 

They will develop and maintain knowledge, skills and competencies related to the role of Occupational Therapy within the service and through completion of the Occupational Therapy apprenticeship training programme which includes working in care settings and delivery of person-centred care.

The Occupational Therapy apprenticeship training combines and integrates both academic and work-based learning through close collaboration between employers and education providers. The apprentice will be based, as an employee, at Wexham Park Hospital, in the acute OT team, but will experience working in alternative settings in order that they gain a wide appreciation of many health and care contexts and are able to fulfil all the requirements of the programme.

Main duties of the job

  • To work under the direct and indirect supervision of a senior Occupational Therapist in providing a high standard Occupational Therapy service on the In-patient wards.
  • After a period of training to work with a specified caseload, with no direct supervision of an Occupational Therapist.
  • To participate in continued personal development and other departmental activities.
  • To assist people to follow individual treatment plans that aid recovery following illness, maximise independence with activities of daily living and promote independence and wellbeing.
  • To support the qualified therapist in their role.
  • Be flexible at times of increased capacity to the service. Hours of work are determined by service need, which includes rostered 7 day working where required.
  • The trainee will develop knowledge of the scope of practice of the Occupational Therapy role within different ward settings
  • Develop and improve practical and theoretical knowledge, competence and skills throughout the apprenticeship Training Programme and maintain all evidence required
  • Contribute towards developing a culture of learning and innovation, developing high quality learning environments

This post will enable you to work at a band 2 level whilst fulfilling a 3 or 4 year apprenticeship degree in Occupational Therapy. You will be given time out to attend university lectures and for the placements. On successful completion of the course you will be able to apply for a band 5 Occupational Therapy post. 

You will have a dedicated mentor and university tutor to help guide you through the course, as well as a supervisor on each in patient rotation.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Able to demonstrate ability to study at level 6
  • Understanding Of role of OT within the MDT
  • Understanding of how OT role fits in the acute hospital setting
  • GCSE grade A-C or functional skills level 2 maths and English (or equivalent)
  • Level 3 or above qualification requirement
Desirable criteria
  • NVQ in OT or relevant care areas

COMPETENCIES

Essential criteria
  • Work with people

  • Ability to work single handedly with individuals and groups
  • Efective written and verbal communication skills
  • Team Player - understanding of team dynamics
  • Computer literate

  • Willingness to work flexibly & must be able to work weekends
  • Must be able to travel independently between sites and able to travel independently to and from university and attend placements external to the work environment
