Job overview

An exciting new post has been created for a psychologist based within the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in Swansea Bay. The post is to establish the beginnings of a psychology service supporting babies who are in NICU and the Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU) and their families/carers, and the multi-disciplinary staff on the unit. The post holder will join a team of Neonatologists, Specialist Neonatal Nurses and a team of AHPs including a physio, OT, SLT and Dietician. The Head of Child Psychology has been undertaking some piloting and scoping work on the unit and will be supporting the post holder to develop this service.

Main duties of the job

The role is likely to involve direct clinical work with babies on the unit and their families, delivered through a stepped care model, providing a universal level of psychological support to all to support with adjustment and resilience; alongside targeted services for those experiencing increased or prolonged distress, such as group or brief interventions; and specialist interventions. There will also be opportunities for indirect work including consultation, MDT discussions and formulation, training and staff interventions including reflective practice groups.  There is an understanding that the size of psychology resource will need to expand, and so the post holder will also have the opportunity to demonstrate outcomes and pilot interventions in order to demonstrate need.

The post holder will be well supported and will join a friendly and supportive department of child psychologists and psychological therapists, including psychologists working in a range of child health situations. There is a network of psychologists working in NICUs across the UK and close links with other psychologists working in neonatal settings in Wales.
