Vehicle technician vacancy at our Blaydon workshop - working on a range of mainly private vehicles but also on the emergency fleet for the North East

Main duties of the job

To have the specialist vehicle knowledge of several vehicle manufacturer types currently operating in the market place, up to 7.5 Tonnes.

 

To provide and /or exchange complex vehicle information required when diagnosing vehicles or when providing instructional support and develop workshop team members to ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction is achieved.

 

Must be self-motivated, pragmatic and able to prioritise work and time according to the operational needs and demands of the business. Demonstrate situation flexibility as and when necessary.

 

To carry out mechanical or electrical repairs to all customers vehicles and ancillary equipment as required. Must be technically astute and able to fault find using the latest diagnostic equipment once fully trained.

 

The post holder is required to carry out specific duties as set out  below. These are; servicing and maintaining vehicles, identifying improvements to processes.

  • Fleet Management - Continuous and consistent awareness of the status of all operational vehicles across your fleet to make informed management and operational decisions.
  • Vehicle Servicing & Repairs - Commercial vehicle and van servicing and repairs, carried out by our highly trained technicians.
  • Equipment Servicing - Vehicles equipped according to regulatory and clinical best practice to perform a specific care response.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 Duties and responsibilities

1.       To carry out the comprehensive in–depth electrical, mechanical and hydraulic diagnosis of vehicle systems.

2.       To provide instructional support to workshop colleagues.

3.       To maintain own skill levels to the highest possible standard maintaining awareness of current and future technology used in the maintenance of the current vehicle market.

4.       To be fully conversant with The Ambulance Service vehicle range, manufacturer technical literature and information bulletins and ensure that this information is shared and understood by all staff.

5.       Work with line managers relating to any long-term vehicle concerns and ensure that all work is carried out in full and followed up until resolved.

6.       To be fully conversant with computerised Fleet management systems to enable accurate input of information to specific vehicle repair work. This is essential to ensure any technician can “Act Up” if the business requires him or her to do so.

7.       Identify training and development requirements and relay these to the Workshop Manager.

8.       To keep work area and protective clothing clean, tidy and fit for form and function whilst also upholding the Fleet and NEASUS image.

9.       Observes a personal duty of care for the equipment and resources used in the course of work.

10.   Carry out road tests on vehicles as and when required.

11.   Comply with the H&SaWA, NEASUS Health and Safety and Fire policies.

12.   Carry’s out all tasks in a systematic and structured manner.

13.   Support the implementation and maintenance of proper controls and processes within the SRL & Fleet Department contract. Such as Quality Checks.

14.   Use systems efficiently and effectively in accordance with NEASUS Fleet policies.

Communication

 

·         Communicates clearly, concisely with professionalism both orally and in writing, with customers, colleagues and suppliers of all levels. This is key during periods of “Acting Up” where you will be required to speak to recovery firms, contractors, dealerships, clients NEASUS Managers.

·         Actively listen to others views and requests in keeping with the Dignity at Work policy and always complying with NEASUS Values and Standards.

·         Obtain detailed information from clients of “Acting Up” to ascertain faults and the best course of action to meet the operational demands of the client and NEASUS.

 

Analytical Ability

 

·         Analyse detailed technical information for completeness and accuracy in order to effectively assist the department in planning and investigative processes.

 

Technical Ability

 

·         Demonstrates and maintains the highest level of technical expertise and competence for a Master Vehicle Technician in the motor industry.

·         Inspect, diagnose vehicle faults and complete allocated work efficiently and accurately by utilising manufacturers technology such as STAR, Clip , Bosch or similar.

·         Provide instructional support to peers, apprentices and work placement learners to maximise productivity and learning opportunities.

·         Identify technical equipment shortages, such as air tools or diagnostic equipment that may impact on the Operation’s ability to carry out specific repairs and make the appropriate recommendations to the Workshop Manager.

 

Commercial Awareness

 

·         If a business opportunity is perceived to bring it to the attention of NEASUS management.

·         Maintain an understanding of developments in the wider motor industry and services that are relevant to NEASUS growing its business.

·         The above is only an outline of the tasks, responsibilities and outcomes required of the role. The post holder will carry out any other duties as may reasonably be required by their line manager.

Infection Control & Covid 19

 

·         It is your responsibility to adhere to infection control policies in order to promote cleanliness and reduce infections. This includes the strict use of seat covers on all Trust vehicles whilst driving or working on them where you have to sit on any seat. Hand hygiene must be undertaken correctly to prevent the spread of infection.  Personal protective equipment must be used in accordance with NEASUS policy. You must contribute to the cleanliness of the work environment and keep it “clutter free” and tidy at the end of each shift.  You must attend all mandatory training and updates to ensure you receive training appropriate to your role.

·         All aspects of Covid 19 control must be observed.

Work Experience/Achievements

Essential criteria
  • The post holder must be experienced in maintaining cars, CDV's, Passenger Service Vehicles and Goods vehicles up to 7.5 tonnes.
  • Must be a fully qualified motor vehicle technician.
  • You will have attained a recognised level of certification ie. City & Guilds Motor Vehicle Technician or NVQ level 2 or equivalent.
  • Must have specialist knowledge of motor vehicle electrical systems and mechanical components.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of a range of computer based vehicle diagnostic systems and the ability to analyse and interpret the information presented by the systems to determine the most appropriate repair option.
  • Have the ability to diagnose all other vehicle faults without access to diagnostic equipment.
  • Knowledge of vehicle legislation and health and safety legislation and to be able to demonstrate what PPE is required whilst carrying out their duties.
  • Must be willing to carry out MOT tester training.
Desirable criteria
  • MOT Testing Certificate
  • Level 3 NVQ/C&G
  • NEBOSH Certificate
  • Knowledge of tail lift systems, their operation and repair.
  • LOLER testing experience.
  • Experience of working with a vehicle fleet management system.
  • Experience of vehicle carnation systems, ideally blue light systems.
  • Experience of working in a fleet management environment.
