Job overview
The Phlebotomy department provides a comprehensive service which includes obtaining blood samples from inpatients and hospital clinics. This is a busy and varied post. The successful candidate will form an integral part of a highly skilled team.
A rota is operated for duties covering all sites and and clinics. The successful candidate will be expected to work on any site within the Northumbria geographical area, although will predominantly work from one site. Our phlebotomy team cover a 7 day working week 365 days a year with shifts covering 08:00-16:30. You will need to be flexible to meet the needs of the service.
There is two 16 hour roles available, across North Tyneside General Hospital, Wansbeck General Hospital and at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Hospital in Cramlington.
Main duties of the job
- Observe patients and report any changes, or incidents involving patients, to a Registered Nurse/Medical team.
- Ensure that patient privacy, dignity and individuality is maintained at all times.
- Respect the patient’s rights.
- Perform safe and efficient venepuncture as per Trust policy.
- Perform safe and efficient labelling and transportation of samples according to Trust and Departmental protocols.
- Maintain stocks of consumables and advise appropriate staff when levels are approaching minimum levels.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
To work as part of the phlebotomy team in supporting the medical and nursing staff, by obtaining samples from patients by venepuncture and ensuring they are correctly labelled and transported to the Pathology Department for processing.
A Phlebotomy Service is provided to inpatient wards, and assists with complicated and difficult venepunctures in outpatient clinics/departments. Previous experience of venepuncture is preferred but not essential as full training will be provided. Applicants should have good education including knowledge of IT.
The work involves handling biological samples and paperwork associated with this process therefore the Trust and departmental health and safety policies must be adhered to at all times.
