The Northern Centre for Cancer Care (NCCC) is looking to appoint a Consultant Clinical Scientist (Head of Radiotherapy Engineering, QA and Dosimetry).

Main duties of the job

We are looking for a highly-motivated, very experienced, MPE radiotherapy physicist to lead on machine quality assurance and dosimetry and lead and manage our in-house radiotherapy engineering team. It is essential that you have well-developed leadership, scientific and technical skills.

You will report to the head of radiotherapy physics and will be a leading player in developing the future strategy for NCCC.

NCCC, as part of the Newcastle-upon-Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust, delivers highly specialised clinical services at two sites, the Freeman Hospital at Newcastle upon Tyne and the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle. The post will be based in Newcastle but will have responsibilities across both sites and so the post-holder will be expected to be flexible in spending time on each.

Working for our organisation

Newcastle Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the busiest, largest and most successful teaching NHS foundation trusts in the country, with around 16,000 staff and an annual income of £1 billion.

We have a long history of providing high quality care, clinical excellence, and innovation in medical research regionally, nationally and internationally.

We’re also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders.

Our staff oversee around 2 million patients ‘contacts’ each year, delivering high standards of healthcare.

Please see attached information on what Staff Benefits we have to offer at our Trust.

We are committed to promoting equality and diversity and recognise the benefit in providing an inclusive environment. We value and respect the diversity of our employees and aim to recruit a workforce which reflects the communities we serve, and is equipped to deliver the best service to our patients. We welcome all applications irrespective of people’s race, disability, gender, sexual orientation, religion or belief, age, gender identity, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity and in particular those from under- represented groups.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Freeman Hospital NCCC site includes:

  • Seven Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators
  • Two TomoTherapy treatment units
  • Two Siemens CT scanners
  • A Siemens MRI scanner dedicated to radiotherapy
  • Brachytherapy radiotherapy treatment delivery
  • kV treatment unit
  • Mould Room facilities
  • Treatment planning

The Cumberland Infirmary NCCC site includes:

  • Two Varian TrueBeam linear accelerators
  • A Siemens CT scanner
  • Access to a Siemens MRI scanner
  • Mould Room facilities

We will be replacing one stereotactic unit Autumn 2024 and plan to replace the second in 2025. Following that, the 2 Tomotherapy units will be end of life and are expected to be replaced. We have a well-developed Aria environment and have for many years been a reference centre for Varian Aria training courses.

The CQC rated NCCC as Outstanding and an Exemplar on their last IR(ME)R inspection, which is a reflection of the well-led and organised nature of the radiotherapy department.

We’re also proud to be the second largest provider of specialised services in the country. This means we support people with a range of rare and complex medical, surgical and neurological conditions, cancers and genetic orders. NCCC treats a wide range of therapies, including SRS, SABR, HDR brachy, TBI/TSEI, gated lung therapy and cardiac SABR. External beam treatment planning is carried out using RayStation, Elements and Precision.  We are highly experienced in the use of AI auto-contouring in the clinical pathway. Treatment plans are checked using Radcalc and Mobius systems and transit IVD is in routine clinical use. NCCC has a strong national teaching pedigree and delivers the MSc in Clinical Science for the national STP program, as well as local FRCR courses, engineering and dosimetrist apprenticeships.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.

As a flexible working friendly organisation, we want to be sure that you can work in a way that is best for us and for our patients, and for you. Speak to us about how we might be able to accommodate a flexible working arrangement. If it works for the service, we will do our best to make it work for you.
