Job overview

To support and assist in designing, implementing, and maintaining the hospital's IT infrastructure, ensuring reliable and secure network operations. This role involves troubleshooting network issues, managing servers, safeguarding patient data through robust security protocols, and supporting the integration of new technologies. The Network Engineer plays a critical role in maintaining the efficiency of clinical and administrative systems, directly impacting patient care by ensuring that essential IT services are always available and functioning optimally.

Main duties of the job

The main duties for this position include maintaining and optimising the hospital's network and communication systems. Main duties include troubleshooting network and telecom issues, configuring and managing routers, switches, and servers, ensuring secure and reliable data transmission, and supporting VoIP and telecommunication systems. The role also involves monitoring network performance, implementing upgrades, and ensuring compliance with NHS data security standards to support seamless clinical and administrative operations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To operationally support and develop the server network and systems infrastructure underpinning the delivery of IT systems and services to the Trust and supported third party organisations.

In association with the Infrastructure Manager, Directory and Security Manager, IT Service Manager, Desktop Support Supervisor and Service Desk Manager, design, specify, procure and implement improvements to the infrastructure, servers and systems supporting delivery of IT systems and services to the Trust and supported third party organisations, in support of the overall departmental and organisational objectives.

Person specification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience with use, support and development/functional extension of HP OpenView Service Desk systems
  • Ability and experience in Java, .NET programming, Windows scripting
  • Substantial experience of working with servers, network equipment and IT management and support systems

Education

Essential criteria
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent experience.
  • Able to demonstrate recent interest in own personal development.
  • Certification to ITIL foundation level
Desirable criteria
  • PRINCE2/Agile Project Management Qualification.

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent, communication, interpersonal, organisational and presentation skills.
  • Capable of developing strategies and policies in line with legislative changes.
  • Excellent decision making and problem-solving skills.
