Job overview

The Northern Gynaecological Oncology Centre (NGOC), based at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust is a leading centre for Gynaecological Oncology, both nationally and internationally. We have recently undertaken the role of host-lead provider for gynaecological cancer surgical services across the North East of England, North Yorkshire and North Cumbria through a collaborative agreement with the Northern Cancer Alliance (NCA), South Tees NHS Foundation Trust and the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation trust to provide a ‘one service, two-centre, three site’ model for the provision of surgery for patients with gynaecological cancers. The aim of this collaboration is to future-proof the provision of excellent, equitable surgical treatment for all patients falling under the NCA footprint.

Main duties of the job

As part of the development of new working practices, we have the opportunity to recruit a locum Consultant Gynaecological Oncologist to join a committed and dynamic team of gynaecological oncologists working across the region. This post will be hosted by Gateshead Health NHS Foundation Trust, with the expectation that sessions will be delivered at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Gateshead and contribute to the delivery of services at partner provider sites. You will be expected to engage in regional and local service development opportunities complimentary to the current wide range of special interests held by the existing team of Consultant Gynaecological Oncology Surgeons working in the region.

Working for our organisation

Based in the North East of England we provide a range of hospital and community health services from our leading facilities, including the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Blaydon urgent care centre and Bensham Hospital, all within Gateshead.

Established in 2005, we were one of the first foundation trusts in the country and since then have consistently achieved the highest levels of care for patients.

We now employ around 4,800 staff and currently provide 444 hospital beds across the Gateshead region.

Our values should be the ‘golden thread’ which runs through everything we do – they are the core of who we are. Our five values can easily be remembered by the simple acronym ICORE; Innovation, Care, Openness, Respect, Engagement.

We have a number of staff networks including the Global Ethnic Majority (GEM) network, D-Ability network, LGBTQ+ Network and the Women’s Network, to challenge us and help us to constantly improve. Our Armed Forces network is one of our emerging networks.

The health and wellbeing of our staff is one of our highest priorities, and we offer a range of support and initiatives as part of our ‘Balance’ programme balancegateshead.com to cater for our diverse workforce, so that your individual needs can be supported, allowing you a happy and healthy working experience with us.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The successful applicant will form part of the Consultant team at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Gateshead and will be expected to work effectively with the existing team of 6 whole-time equivalent consultants to support the delivery of a region-wide tertiary gynaecological oncology service. Supported by the Northern Cancer Alliance and Specialist Commissioners and in partnership with our regional surgical and non-surgical oncology partners, we are embarking on an ambitious programme of service development to ensure a robust, cohesive and clinically-led service across the region, working towards establishing a Managed Clinical Network for Gynaecological Oncology services across NENC. You will be expected to support this collaborative effort to improve outcomes through your professional relationships across the spectrum of specialties, management and associated organisations involved in delivering a world class surgical service. This will require clinical sessions to be delivered at our partner provider trusts. This will include but is not limited to outpatient clinics and cancer multi-disciplinary team meetings, with a view to developing further sessions including surgical provision at both South Tees and Newcastle sites.

Clinical duties

The successful candidate should expect to lead 1 x 2-session (all-day) job planned operating list per week, as part of a rotational timetable that will include a broad spectrum of gynaecological cancer surgery. Additional operating sessions can be accessed through cross cover arrangements depending on the final agreed job plan. To support this activity, you will be expected to undertake a dedicated weekly new patient MDT clinic and an additional weekly complex follow-up/pre-op planning clinic. In addition to its tertiary service delivery, the department also provides a colposcopy service and a regional pre-invasive genital tract disease service. You will be expected to contribute to the clinical workload of one of these services through the delivery of a dedicated clinic. Further direct clinical care commitments will include attendance at one of the weekly regional virtual gynaecology cancer MDT meetings hosted at Gateshead or South Tees. The consultant team provide 24-hour, 365-days per year on call cover for gynaecological oncology only, through a rotational on call rota.

The appointment and includes a 1:7 on-call arrangement, with prospective cover.
