Job overview

We are looking for a caring, enthusiastic and adaptable dental nurse to join our friendly  team. Responsibilities will include assisting the dental clinician during routine clinical sessions, general anaesthetic sessions, orthodontics, school screening, dental surveys and domiciliary dental care. Staff are supported and encouraged to participate in clinical audit, CPD and in-house training days. 

The successful candidate will work between Community Dental and Oral Surgery in a new purpose built unit at Hexham General Hospital, with the opportunity to develop skillset in multiple areas. The post-holder may be asked to travel to all sites within the Northumbria Community Dental Portfolio but will be based at Hexham General Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  • National Certificate of the Examination Board for Dental Nurse or Certificate of Proficiency recognised by the Association of Dental Hospitals of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or a qualification approved by the Secretary of State as being equivalent to one of the above.
  • Current registration with the General Dental Council.
  • The ability to meet the transport requirements of this post to travel independently between sites.
  • Additional Radiology certification or willingness to work towards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

To provide administrative, routine chairside and general anaesthetic assistance for dental clinicians.

To be responsible (under the supervision of the dentist) for preparing premises and equipment for treatment and screening sessions and domiciliary care.

To participate in the preparation of the patient for, and support with the taking of digital radiographs.

To provide support to the Oral Surgeons in clinics and treatment sessions outside of the theatres environment.

To provide clinical support for the dentist during screening survey and clinical sessions, including some general anaesthetic lists, support for the community orthodontic specialist and domiciliary dental care.

To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.

Essential criteria
  • National Certificate of the examination Board for dental Nursing or Certificate of proficiency recognized by the Association of Dental Hospitals of Great Britain and Northern Ireland or a qualification approved by the Secretary of State as being equivalent to one of the above
  • Registration with the General Dental Council is expected to become mandatory for all dental nurses from October 2005. Unqualified dental nurses will be accepted on to the register under a grandparenting clause
  • Dental Nursing Certificate in Conscious sedation
  • Dental Nursing Certificate in dental radiography
  • Dental Nursing Certificate in conscious sedation required which requires specialist dental nursing skills
  • Dental Nursing Certificate in Dental Radiography essential which requires specialist dental nursing knowledge and skills
