Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and driven individual to join our Sports and Fitness Team within Secure care services.    You will contribute to promoting and facilitating exercise, not only as a distraction or a recreational pastime but as a valued therapeutic tool.   We are looking for someone with the appropriate skills and knowledge as well as previous experience within a secure setting.

Main duties of the job

You will help develop a sport exercise & activity based culture within the Hospital site / wards & facilitate onsite, community based interventions for both individuals & groups.

You will develop & maintain strong working links with the recovery and engagement team, physical health hub and wards, helping facilitate designated tasks as identified as beneficial to health and wellbeing.

Use specialist technical skills & knowledge to contribute to the delivery of care to service users who have a variety of needs, diverse presentations and a range of physical health, neurological conditions, mental health conditions, cognitive and/or learning disabilities under the direction of a registered practitioner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Work collaboratively with colleagues directly involved in the delivery of health care, both in the community and hospital in-patient settings, and will develop good working relationships and networks with community resources and providers both statutory and non-statutory to maximise independence.

Provide written and verbal feedback in a timely manner on patient care and progression.

Demonstrate the ability to overcome barriers to communication, supporting Service User’s understanding by adapting the approach used (eg use of Interpreters where English is not a first language, alternative and augmentative communication methods), to ensure that they can access and engage effectively with services.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Formal qualifications eg. NVQ Level III, diploma or equivalent
  • level of knowledge > Personal Training qualification level 3
  • GP referral qualification Level 3 or willing to work towards
  • Gym Instructor Level 2

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Recent or current experience of working in a mental health setting/secure care
  • Experience of training others in a task or skill
  • Involvement in group based interventions
  • Experience which can demonstrate leadership skills, an ability to self-motivate and motivate others
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working with groups

Skills and Competencies

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrate the ability to overcome barriers to communication, supporting Service User’s understanding by adapting the approach used
  • Evidence of interpersonal and communication skills that promote and maintain therapeutic relationships with service users, their families and carers.
  • Good literacy skills
Desirable criteria
  • Understanding of need to have negotiation skills
