Job overview

An opportunity has arisen within the Central Finance team for a Senior Management Accountant. The primary objectives of the role are to support delivery of the Trust’s monthly finance reporting to the Trust Board and the delivery of the monthly finance dashboards to budget holders. The post will also support development of all systems that deliver financial information or systems that provide information that supports financial decisions.

 

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated individual to support and contribute to the development of the Central Finance Team. The successful applicant will need to have a professional accountancy qualification (CCAB, CIMA or equivalent) or have significant relevant experience in exceptional circumstances. They will also be expected to provide a comprehensive financial support, information and advice service to budget holders and senior managers in central departments.

The post will be based at Arran House, St Nicholas Hospital, Newcastle upon Tyne. Hybrid working across Arran House and Remote Working is available and will be discussed with Line Manager.

Main duties of the job

To support delivery of the Trust’s monthly finance reporting to the Trust Board and the delivery of the monthly finance dashboards to budget holders.

To support delivery of the Trust’s annual budgets.

To provide an overview of the financial management service to the budget and service managers, which includes the provision of specialist advice to budget managers that ensures the most effective, economic and efficient use of resources.

To provide a comprehensive and responsive technical financial resource for the Trust to support business change, development and service improvement, commercial agenda and delivery of financial plans.

To support the Group Operational Management Team in identifying Group objectives to contribute to the achievement of the strategic vision of the Trust.

To deputise for the Deputy Head of Management Accounts and Head of Business Development as and when required, on issues relating to areas covered by this post.

To provide support and monitoring of the financial contract between CNTW FT and related subsidiary.

To support the Heads of Business Development and Head of Financial Delivery to understand the business needs of the Groups and Services and help develop solutions to meet these requirements.

Education and Qualification

Essential criteria
  • Professional Accountancy qualification (CCAB, CIMA or equivalent) or in exceptional circumstances significant relevant experience (5 years)

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Significant management accounting experience
  • Extensive experience of using a financial ledger package and the use of spreadsheets
  • Experience of managing relationships with colleagues across a range of disciplines within the organisation and with contacts in external organisations
  • Experience of staff management
  • A good knowledge of general accepted accounting principles awareness of Standing Orders, reservation of powers to the Board and delegation of powers, SFIs, Fraud Policy and Response Plan, Manual for Accounts and the NHS Finance Manual.
  • Good working knowledge of financial/business environment facing a large complex NHS Trust
  • An expert knowledge of budget setting and budgetary control practices
  • A good working knowledge of the requirements for internal control and internal audit

Skills and Competencies

Essential criteria
  • Possess a comprehensive range of analytical, numerical, statistical and financial skills
  • Possess management and decision making skills, able to develop practical action plans and have the ability to delegate tasks and able to lead, direct and motivate staff, including carrying out staff appraisals and personal development plans
  • Ability to achieve deadlines and prioritise work
  • Possess a high level of interpersonal skills and be able to communicate effectively with a wide range of individuals and groups, both inside and outside the Trust. This will involve financial issues that can be complicated and/or sensitive where some interpretation for non finance people is involved.
  • Ability to meet the mobility requirements of the post.
  • Good report writing and presentation skills
  • Strong negotiating skills Good team player with ability to be self-directed and complete work to tight deadlines when necessary
  • Complex analytical skills are required in the role, the postholder will be required to make judgements where a number of variables require analysis, interpretation and comparison to assess an outcome.
  • The ability to plan and organise a broad range of complex activities which require the continuous review and adjustment of these plans, to support the budgetary control function within the Division.
  • The post requires physical skills which you would normally obtain through experience and practice. Such skills would include general keyboard skills
