Job overview

The post will enable the specialty doctor to get a range of experiences across various psychiatric specialties. The post holder will be expected to rotate in services which will be agreed in consultation with management. The range of experiences which will be available include children and young people’s services, addictions services, inpatient general adult and community services, inpatient and community services for older people and services within specialist care such as eating disorders and autism.

Main duties of the job

The clinical responsibilities of the job will include assessment (medical and psychiatric), treatment and management of patients referred to the service. Multidisciplinary team working will be essential. Administration responsibilities include appropriate documentation as required within the Trust systems. The Doctors work will be supervised by the consultant psychiatrist involved within that service. The job will involve 8.5 clinical PAs and 1.5 PAs dedicating to supporting you in professional activities including continuous professional development. Post holder will also be supported in developing any academic interest and to partake in audit and research.

Person specification

Qualification and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Registration with the GMC (or eligible to become registered) with a licence to practice
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPsych or equivalent
  • Postgraduate qualifications in a relevant field
  • Has undergone training in educational supervision
  • Has undergone training in appraisal
  • Included on GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligible for inclusion, or a trainee within six months of CCT
  • Approved under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983
  • Approved Clinician Status

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Up to date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry
Desirable criteria
  • Awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy and legislation

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Wide clinical experience in psychiatry in different clinical settings
  • Minimum of 4 years full-time postgraduate training including 2 years work experience in psychiatry
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in multi agency work especially with service user, carer and voluntary agencies
  • Experience in service management or development
  • Experience of clinical audit

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Proven competence in diagnosis and management of psychiatric disorders
  • Good teaching skills
Desirable criteria
  • Established record of clinical leadership
  • Established ability as a clinical teacher
