Job overview

Your base site is  North Tyneside Hospital, North Shields, home/remote working will be an option although it is expected that the post holder will attend base site as and when required.

Dose Adjustment For Normal Eating (DAFNE) is an internationally delivered self-management structured education (SE) programme, in insulin dose adjustment for adults with type 1 diabetes. DAFNE is recognised by NICE as the gold standard SE programme for type 1 diabetes. 

DAFNE is delivered by 112 specialist diabetes teams across the UK, Republic of Ireland and Crown Dependencies. It has been adopted by overseas teams in Australia/New Zealand, Kuwait, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a confident, highly motivated, enthusiastic healthcare professional (HCP) with specialist knowledge/experience in diabetes, SE and intensive insulin therapy to join the team. Responsible for taking a leading role in the development of DAFNE patient and HCP training programmes and be able to demonstrate a capacity to design coherent education courses, linking taught components to work based practice.

The successful applicant will be experienced in training, coaching, behaviour change techniques and patient empowerment models.

High levels of personal and professional motivation are required to generate new ideas and initiatives to drive innovation and bring about change required to meet the developing needs of the person living with diabetes and their healthcare team.

Developed interpersonal and communication skills are essential to develop and maintain effective relationships with key members of the DAFNE programme team and internal and external stakeholders.

 

 

Main duties of the job

The post holder is responsible for taking a leading role in the design and development of the DAFNE training portfolio for people living with diabetes. 

The post holder will develop and deliver DAFNE training to healthcare professionals from national and international diabetes specialist teams on effective delivery of courses within the DAFNE portfolio for people living with diabetes.

They will develop and maintain robust assessment criteria and on-going quality assurance programmes for DAFNE educators and doctors.

Working collaboratively with the national director, operations manager and Executive Board to anticipate future training requirements and develop innovative training solutions to meet evolving diabetes healthcare needs.

The post holder will be responsible for managing a team of national DAFNE trainers to ensure ongoing provision of high-quality healthcare professional training.

 The post holder will be able to apply a problem-solving approach with flexibility to meet deadlines and respond to changing priorities and needs to support the programme director to achieve the strategic aims of DAFNE.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Take a leading role in the development of DAFNE patient and healthcare professional training programmes and associated resources and curricula.
• To deliver DAFNE training to healthcare professionals on how to deliver the DAFNE patient courses as DAFNE educators/doctors and embed DAFNE within a specialist diabetes service; carry out a tutor role to provide professional development support and educator assessment.
• To contribute to external audit of DAFNE services in the UK and Republic of Ireland (RoI).
• To assess, advise and support specialist diabetes teams who are implementing the DAFNE Programme.
• Support the delivery of the national DAFNE Programme strategy; particularly, but not exclusively, areas relating to Educator activity.
• To be a member of the National DAFNE Executive Board
• Provide support and advice on educational and clinical aspects of DAFNE to the National Director helping them to succeed.
• Public figurehead / spokesperson for DAFNE educators
• Work with national director and operations manager in developing, implementing quality assurance for the national DAFNE programme.
• To role model compassionate and inclusive leadership in order to shape the creation of a collective leadership culture within the trust. This means demonstrating a consistent leadership style which (a) engages, enables and empowers others (b) uses coaching to promote ownership of learning and quality improvement and (c) facilitates team working and collaboration within teams / departments and across organisational boundaries.
