An exciting opportunity has arisen for enthusiastic individuals driven by delivering high quality patient care to join our Emergency Department team as a Flow Co-Ordinator. This is a new, crucial role that is being established within the team.

The Royal Victoria Infirmary is home to the Great North Trauma and Emergency Centre. The centre is one of two major trauma centres serving the Northern Trauma Network, which extends from the Scottish Borders to Yorkshire. We are one of twelve major trauma centres in the UK treating both adults and children.

The successful post holders will be integral in ensuring smooth and efficient patient flow to create positive patient experience. This includes taking action or escalating issues when appropriate, under the guidance and support of the Nurse and Consultant in Charge (NIC/CIC). You will be joining a supportive team and full training will be provided.

  • Answering queries from patients and their relatives
  • Contacting Speciality teams for attendance to the ED
  • Contact Pathology and Radiology at the request of the NIC/CIC to chase up results or progress to support patient flow
  • Action any transport requests for patients who require urgent transfer or transport
  • Ensure patients are transferred in a timely manner once a bed has been identified through liaising with the transfer team and portering staff to co-ordinate patient transfer and movements
  • Updating the patient tracker as per patient movement
  • Ensure that all patients discharged from the department have a real time discharge recorded on the system
  • Support the NIC to complete breach analysis for every patient who breaches the 4-hour ED standard

In patient services - Bed management:

  • Coordination of inpatient admissions, transfer and discharge across and between medical wards
  • Act a principle contact with patients, health care professionals and other organisations to ensure an efficient, effective and value for money service is in place, maintained and developed
  • Contribute to a consistently high standard of patient care as a member of a multi-disciplinary team
  • Work in collaboration with the Ward Manager and MDT staff to support the discharge planning process
  • To assist in maintaining patient flow throughout the ward
  • To act as a ‘runner’ to ensure all necessary actions are undertaken and completed to facilitate efficient and effective discharge

Management role within inpatient and outpatient services:

  • Provides day to day management for ward clerks on the inpatient wards, when necessary
  • Provides local training & induction for these staff, when necessary
