This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Pre Assessment Nurse to join our established assessment service.

We are looking for an enthusiastic team player who will participate in innovation and evidence based nursing practice through professional leadership to enhance the patient's experience from referral through to procedure dealing with any concerns and supporting the clinical teams.

The successful candidate will coordinate hosting telephone and face to face pre assessment clinics for patients requiring surgical procedures. Travel between units will be required to undertake pre-assessment of patients.

The role also offers the added benefit in gaining competency in Cardio pulmonary exercise Testing (CPeT) which is a vital tool in assessing a patients readiness for major surgery.

To work in conjunction with the Senior nurses to develop and implement a quality peri-operative assessment service to meet the needs of all clients requiring anaesthesia and surgery. The post holder will work within the department to provide the highest standards of patient care using research evidence-based practice, national and local protocols.

To perform the competencies of a trained pre assessment nurse and in addition any competencies associated to the allocated speciality. To undertake the teaching and assessment of Junior personnel.

The post holder will assess, plan, implement and evaluate programmes of care for patients undergoing theatre procedures. To act autonomously within given competencies and recognise when to make appropriate referrals.

  • The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust define a nurse specialist as a qualified nurse where the primary purpose of role is to provide  guidance and support based on advanced level knowledge to patients, carers and health professionals concerning a specific disease/condition.

  • Within the sphere of specialist practice:
    o Is working towards advanced knowledge and skills within specialist sphere of practice.
    o Contributes to the facilitation of the planning, delivery and evaluation of care pathways for a designated group of patients.
    o Support the development of nursing practice within the specialist field and contribute to the body of nursing knowledge.
    o Contributes to training and education within specialist area.

Please note it is a requirement of The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust that all successful candidates who require a DBS for the post they have been offered pay for their DBS certificate. The method of payment is a salary deduction from your first month’s pay.
