Job overview
We are looking for either a Clinical Technologist or Radiographer to join our friendly team providing a comprehensive clinical Nuclear Medicine service to the people of Newcastle Upon Tyne and Northumberland. The service is across two sites, one successful candidate will work at both the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital site. This is a full-time post for 37.5 hours per week.
The Nuclear Medicine & Bone Densitometry Department is part of the Radiology Directorate and performs around 18,000 procedures per year. On each site, facilities include a radiopharmacy, dual headed gamma cameras, a SPECT CT system, gamma counter, cell labelling suite and bone densitometry scanners. We also deliver a range of molecular radiotherapy treatments (for example Lu177 Dotatate, Ra223 Xofigo, I-131 therapy).
The candidate will be expected to have good communication skills and be a team player. You will work alongside other healthcare professionals including Clinical Scientists, Nurse Specialists, Radiologists, Radiography Assistants and clerical staff to provide the very best patient care in our busy department caring for paediatric and adult patients.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate will be providing the technical aspects of the nuclear medicine and bone mineral density service within the Trust.
The successful candidate would be expected to:-
- Be responsible for the safe implementation of the practical/technical aspects of patient investigations.
- Adhere to Trust and local policies relating to issues such as infection control, etc.
- Implement local protocols, procedures and policies and contribute to their development where appropriate.
- Perform computer processing of patient investigations.
- Manufacture of radiopharmaceuticals according to Good Manufacturing Practice.
- Perform administration of radiopharmaceuticals to patients.
- Provide assistance for cardiac stress testing of patients where needed
- Contribute to the training of new staff
The above may change to meet the needs and circumstances of Nuclear Medicine and Newcastle Hospitals.

Candidates should hold a relevant degree and have appropriate clinical experience. Membership or working towards registration of the Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) or The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) will be required.

Job Purpose
Clinical Technologist/Senior Radiographer
- Providing the technical aspects of the nuclear medicine and bone mineral density service within the Trust.
- Performs a range of specialist healthcare science activities
- Involvement in research and development projects
- To be part of a team delivering a high quality efficient and effective imaging service, to make an informed decision on the diagnostic images required and demonstrate a professional, caring and responsible approach to patients.

Clinical Technologist
Essential criteria
- Degree or equivalent in relevant subject
- The post-holder is expected to be on the Voluntary Register for Clinical Technologists or working towards registration
- Completion of a recognised training scheme
- Literacy, numeracy and accuracy of a high order
- Good knowledge of IT software packages (e.g. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and experience of applying them
- Specialist knowledge and skills in medical or scientific equipment relevant to working area
- Detailed knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology relevant to area of work
- Knowledge of clinical hazards and infection control.
- Knowledge, skill and experience necessary to respond calmly, competently and professionally in the event of a patient experiencing problems, including CPR
- Good hand-eye co-ordination requiring a high degree of precision
- The post holder is expected to follow an approved programme of continuing professional development (CPD)
- Flexibility of approach

Desirable criteria
- Post Graduate Diploma in relevant subject
- Some knowledge of the physics and engineering principles in the operation of complex nuclear medicine equipment
- IV cannulation competency
Senior Radiographer
Essential criteria
- Working knowledge of all relevant professional and NHS policies and procedures
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of radiation protection and methods of reducing radiation dose as well as a working knowledge of ionising radiation legislation (IR (ME) R)
- Evidence of CPD.
- Good organisational interpersonal and communication skills, with ability to work effectively in a team or independently as required
- IT skills necessary for Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Picture Archiving and Communication Systems (PACS).
- Cross sectional experience (CT or MRI)
- HCPC registered, BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography or equivalent
- Post Graduate qualification in a clinical speciality, or post graduate specialist short courses or relevant specialist experience
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of audit
- IV Cannulation
- Cross sectional experience in both CT and MRI
