Are you a HCPC registered radiographer looking for some experience in Nuclear Medicine?

An opportunity has arisen to join our team of  Nuclear Medicine Clinical Technologists based at University Hospital of Hartlepool on a fixed term basis for 12 months. You will contribute to the delivery of a comprehensive Nuclear Medicine service delivering approximately 4,000 patient examinations per year.

SPECT-CT is undertaken in an expanding number of examinations and there is an on-site radiopharmacy.  Extended five day working (Monday to Friday 07:00 – 19:45) utilising a 7.5 hour-long 5 shift rota will be
expected.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will put patient care at the centre of their work and demonstrate excellent team working skills.  Working at other sites within the Department will occasionally be required.

Nuclear Medicine services at Darlington, Durham and Hartlepool are provided by the Northern Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering Directorate of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals.  The team of 31 technologists, nurses, clinical scientists, admin staff, radiologists and cardiologists  work collaboratively across the three sites, and have a strong history of staff development and training.  Opportunities for role development and ongoing training will be available for the right candidate.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Principle duties will include:

  • Administration of radiopharmaceuticals by oral, IV and intradermal techniques
  • Following appropriate protocols to provide accurate and timely clinical results for patients undergoing molecular imaging procedures 
  • Quality control testing of a wide range of equipment, taking remedial action where required
  • Contributing to patient care, including emergency action in the event of patient deterioration
  • Communicating complicated procedures and concepts to a wide range of people, including patients or relations who may be confused or distressed

Job Purpose

  • Provides the technical aspects of the nuclear medicine service within North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust; based at the University Hospital of Hartlepool
  • Performs a range of specialist healthcare science activities
  • Involvement in research and development projects.

Person specification

KNOWLEDGE

Essential criteria
  • A good knowledge and understanding of all relevant safety principles, standards and legislation applied to the clinical use of radioactive material & associated physiological measurement equipment in the UK e.g. ECG recording.
Desirable criteria
  • Radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing
  • Some knowledge of the physics and engineering principles involved in the operation of complex nuclear medicine equipment
  • Knowledge of urodynamics studies.

SKILLS

Essential criteria
  • Patient handling skills of a high order
  • Numeracy and accuracy of a high order
  • The ability to work under pressure.

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Substantial Nuclear Medicine experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Practical experience in radiopharmaceutical manufacturing and dispensing.
  • Practical experience of urodynamics.

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential criteria
  • Degree in Clinical Physiology or Clinical Technology, or a degree or equivalent qualification in another relevant subject e.g. Applied Physics, Radiography or Biomedical Science.
  • A diploma in Nuclear Medicine or equivalent experience.
  • Registered with HCPC (radiographers) or eligible for membership of the Professional Standards Authority Accredited Register of Clinical Technologists.
