Job overview

We are expanding the number of Consultant Clinical Psychologists within our inpatient mental health services in line with operational senior leadership recognition of the value that clinical psychologists at a senior level bring. 

We are excited to be able to expand the number of Consultant Clinical Psychologist roles within our inpatient mental health wards.  We have redesigned our model in line with the recent ACP-UK guidelines about inpatient mental health services and as a Trust are working towards being able to staff that model fully. 

This is a 0.5 WTE  Consultant Clinical Psychologist Role across 4 mental health wards for working age adults. You will join our supportive Inpatient and urgent care  Psychological Services team which is part of the wider inpatient and urgent care services.  There are 1.9 WTE Consultant Clinical Psychologist in the service already, covering urgent care, older adults and adults of working age. Your role will be to work alongside a current post holder to develop and embed services within 4 wards.  

Main duties of the job

We have a number of pathways including one with 3 female wards and a female PICU, one with 3 male wards and a male PICU, one with 2 Rehab wards and additional assessment / short admission ward for working age adults which is not part of the rehab pathway. There is additionally a pathway of 4 wards for older adults which has a substantive post holder in place.   You will be asked to work within one of these groups of wards but may be asked to input to a different set of working age adult wards if service needs arise.

Using your expert knowledge and skills you will provide leadership, consultation, and supervision for colleagues working with mental health inpatients.  You will be responsible for the governance of psychological interventions and provide expert psychological advice to senior management both about psychological services but also the wider inpatient teams. You will hold responsibility for a range of senior and junior psychological professionals across various specialties, as well as managing your own clinical caseload.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

These roles require highly developed communication skills, being authentic and truly engaged with multi-professional team working, respecting others and excellent relationship building skills, and additionally offer back much satisfaction and a chance to make a tangible difference to the lives of people experiencing mental health challenges which require an inpatient admission. Inpatient services are currently engaged in a 3 year transformation programme focusing on purposeful admissions, increasing therapeutic interventions and proactive discharge.  This offers an opportunity for development of new models and to contribute to effective and compassionate admissions.

This role is a key member of the senior clinical leadership team within Mental Health Acute Services. Under the professional leadership of the Directorate Lead for Psychological Services and Professions and working closely with operational leads in, and managed by the Mental Health Associate Director of Operations , this role will provide clinical leadership and governance for parts of either Mental Health Inpatient Services or Urgent Care services.

  • Registration with the HCPC in Clinical Psychology.

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the theory and practice of highly specialist assessment methods and therapeutic approaches in relation to the client group.
  • Knowledge of legislation in relation to the designated services
  • Post-doctoral training relevant to the post.
  • Extensive experience of team working.
  • Evidence of continuing professional development.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience of clinical leadership and service development.
  • Extensive experience of working with adults with mental health difficulties and those experiencing mental health crises.
  • Extensive experience of delivering highly specialist services.
  • Experience of working with a range of clients, presenting a range of clinical severity and maintenance of professionalism in challenging circumstances.
