UHCW is one of the largest acute Trust’s in the country. With 16 Cardiology Consultants, we provide World Class innovation and research in all aspects of Cardiology.

We are seeking an experienced, dynamic, enthusiastic and highly specialized Echo Cardiac Physiologist/Clinical Scientist to lead and develop our Echocardiography Service here at UHCW Trust and at our Community Diagnostic Hubs. Who will share our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

We offer a region-leading Cardiac Imaging Service, offering the full repertoire of echocardiography. Including Complex ACHD, 3D Echocardiography, Pharmacological and Exercise Ischaemic Stress Echo, Strain Echocardiography, TOE, DSE, Transcatheter Structural Intervention and Cardio-Oncology Echocardiography. As well as providing Advanced Cardiac Imaging input to regional hospitals and a range of West Midlands MDTs. 

We anticipate future service developments which will include advanced Cardiac Physiologist led clinics.

We actively support the training of new cardiac physiologists, specialist registrars, and members of the wider multidisciplinary team as well as our own staff. We hold regular MDT meetings for interesting case review or when there is ambiguity, providing further training opportunities. The department encourages and supports research, educational development and attendance and participation at local and national meetings.

Main duties of the job

Reporting to the Head of Department for Cardiac Investigations, the successful applicant will be responsible for managing a team of Cardiac Physiologists, driving innovation, recruitment and developing Cardiac Physiologist led services.

This is a full-time role with clinical and on-call responsibilities.

Successful candidates must be able to demonstrate the following attributes:

  1. Have significant experience working independently as a band 7 specialist practitioner in Echocardiography.
  2. To work as a highly specialist practitioner across the range of Echocardiography imaging procedures performed in the Department of Cardiac Investigation (DCI) and the Catheter Lab, furthermore, to provide operational management support to the DCI manager/Chief Clinical Physiologist for the specified area within Cardiac Investigations.
  3. To provide nationally accredited highly specialist expertise for clinical practice, ensuring that all procedures and data produced are to the required standard and are documented in accordance with Operational Procedures/national guidelines.
  4. To work across all sites as required, managing the workload for your designated clinical area, ensuring effective workforce planning, maximized capacity and robust service delivery.
  5. To ensure diagnostic tests are performed in accordance with protocols and diagnostic reports containing a range of complex facts and measurements are accurate and produced in a timely manner.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To actively contribute to service developments and expansion, taking part in Audits, Capacity and Demand planning and supporting business case developments.
  • Experienced in CP led services for Echocardiography and how the implementation of such services would be introduced to UHCW, to drive efficiencies and meet capacity needs.
  • To manage cardiac physiologists, participate in appraisals and personal reviews and work to achieve agreed set objectives, including the required attendance of national and departmental meetings and nationally accredited courses.
  • Ensure full BSE and advanced accreditation is maintained for self and team.
  • Undertake further training as required for both professional development and service provision and be actively involved in clinical governance of service and service development.
  • To manage financial budget and ensure adequate stock levels of consumables are maintained, to ensure effective utilization of resources and continual service delivery.
  • To support the Cardiology Operational Management Team in development and adherence of protocols and procedure guidelines, to ensure compliance with Trust/Operational requirements.
