The Department currently consists of 5 Substantive Consultants and our stated aim is to continue to build a first-class department which is recognised both nationally and internationally. We are looking for highly committed and enthusiastic individual who not only share this aim but are able to integrate fully into the department which has remained a cohesive, well balanced and immensely friendly department in which to work.

This post holder, in collaboration with clinical colleagues, will provide a comprehensive adult Cardiac Surgical service for Coventry, Warwickshire, Birmingham, Northamptonshire, Kettering and Worcester.

The post holder will participate in the Cardiac Surgery on call rota.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be appointed on the new consultant contract which will consist of up to 10 Programmed Activities (PA’s). This will consist of up to 7.5 PA’s for direct clinical care and 2.5 PA’s for supporting professional activities to enable the post holder to comply with the requirements for revalidation and CPD with further SPA activity negotiable pending taking on roles within the department after the initial six months in post. The DCC commitment will consist of clinical sessions as outlined above. The on-call commitment is 2PA per week and carries a supplement of 5% for on-call.  Where duties require travel between two sites, travel expenses will be reimbursed. There will be time built into the job plan where travel between sites is required, however it is expected this will be minimised wherever possible.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

For those consultants wishing to undertake private practice; the Trust does not require them to do an extra Programmed Activity but will require it to be declared as part of the annual job planning process. The Trust has the required arrangements in place to ensure that all surgeons have an annual appraisal with a trained appraiser and supports surgeons going through the revalidation process. There is a commitment from the Trust to the postholder that they will have equitable working conditions to their colleagues. A job plan review would be timetabled for the successful candidate within 6 months of commencing post. Administration facilities at the Trust provide a desk for Cardiac surgery consultants within their specified office spaces with dedicated secretarial support.
