Job overview

As a Band 6 Clinical Sister / Charge you would be responsible for supporting the overall daily management of a team within the Critical Care Unit or Cardiothoracic Critical Care, co-ordinating and leading clinical shifts, providing direct patient care.

You will also lead and participate with projects to enable us to give the excellent care we currently provide. The Band 6 role includes rotation onto nights and weekends.  As the Sister/Charge Nurse, you will be ensuring the application of effective clinical practice of all staff so patients receive the highest possible standard of care

Main duties of the job

UHCW NHS trust is a level one Major Trauma Centre and a tertiary neurosurgical center.   We offer a unique range of services, to a wide population of over one million people treating and managing complex conditions and diseases.  For our nurses, it means the chance to gain diverse experience in pioneering teams.

We have 30 critical care beds on the General Critical Care Unit and 22 beds on the Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit. Our Critical Care services offer a broad experience in caring for critically ill adults in an innovative, challenging and aspirational workplace. We are committed to advancing nursing practice and our Clinical Nurse Training and Development team provide in-house training and support for Clinical and Professional development.

Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit and General Critical Care Unit have merged.

We have opportunities for experienced nurses to work within both our General Critical Care Unit and Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit as band 6 clinical leaders.  Within Critical Care you will gain valuable experience leading and supporting staff in the care of patients with a wide range of needs including Trauma, complex Medical and Surgical patients such as, Haematology, GI Surgery, Vascular Surgery, Renal Medicine/Transplant surgery and Head and Neck Surgery.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Our Cardiothoracic Critical Care Unit care for patients requiring cardiology intervention, elective and emergency cardiac surgery as well as patients requiring elective thoracic surgery and those with thoracic trauma

Our Critical Care services are supported by a strong team of admin, support and management roles who form the backbone of our non-clinical infrastructure; that deliver our values and are committed to highest standards of quality care.

1. Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.

2. A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development

3.  Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited.

4. Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleep-holder responsibilities as appropriate.

5.  Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.

6. Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required

7.Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.

8. Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need
