Job overview

A new and exciting opportunity has arisen for a fixed term Superintendent Sonographer in Gynaecology.

The post holder will be regarded as a senior specialist sonographer in Gynaecology and a key member of the highly specialised Consultant led team. The post holder will have extended  skills  and possess the ability to scan and report autonomously in the specific field of Gynaecology. They will be able to demonstrate specialised knowledge and expertise to support service delivery and play a pivotal role in the development and expansion of the service.

The postholder will be a Gynaecology clinical specialist who has undergone at least 2 years of specialised training in the modality. The postholder will be expected to operate independently within a defined scope of practice. The post-holder will also perform and issue reports pertaining to the field of Gynaecology. It will be expected that the post-holder will work as part of the multi-disciplinary team and will be expected to liaise with all associated services. In addition, the post-holder will already be experienced in image cross-sectional image interpretation and will be able to apply this to their clinical prioritisation and decision making. They will work towards obtaining expertise in the four pillars of advanced practice.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will perform and issue ultrasound reports, providing advanced clinical skills and opinion and diagnosis for patient centred care. They will exercise the highest degree of professional autonomy in the decision-making process and are required to liaise with consultant colleagues and Radiographers to improve overall patient outcomes.

The postholder will have a number of key working relationships within the department and wider organisation in ensuring definition of scopes of practice for others and continuously develop clinical practice within their defined field.

They will be the expert Gynaecology sonographer to lead and support the operational management team as well as clinical leaders and colleagues in the development of Gynaecological ultrasound services in line with best practice and national standards.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• Maintain a high-quality standard of patient care and provide an excellent experience for patients. 
• To independently undertake ultrasound examinations using a high level of specialist knowledge in line with local, regional and national guidance. 
• To be responsible for the management of development of the specialist service ensuring use of optimum resource and facilities. 
• To be responsible for the professional leadership and development (including training) of the wider team. 
• To develop and improve professional expertise via continuous professional development.
• To ensure a safe working environment.
• To ensure compliance with CQC standards and specialist reporting guidance. 
• To participate in the vetting and prioritisation of ultrasound examinations according to departmental and national guidelines. 
• Be professionally responsible for the optimisations of services and improvements in utilisation of ultrasound lists.
• To provide a service across multiple locations as per service needs. 
• Support responsibility for the definition of the daily work programme/scheduling of imaging. 
• Training, teaching and supervision of trainees, qualified junior staff and assistant staff in both the delivery of the service and their individual needs.
• Take a leadership role in development of the service expansion and proactively manage the expectations around space, equipment and staffing requirements. 
• Learn to always communicate complex and sensitive information to patients and clients in a professional manner, explaining procedures and obtaining consent when necessary. 
• To encourage the development of, and provide expert assistance to, more junior sonographers and act as a role model to all members of staff. To supervise and teach radiological specialist registrars and to organise suitable educational experiences within the speciality for medical and other health professional students. 
• Regular participation in clinical audit and develop a culture of audit for the speciality.
• Lead on development and innovation in new clinical practices and technology.
• Assisting and managing workflows ensuring data inputs are recorded for both patient record and integrity and statistical evaluation purposes according to information governance and data protection policies. 
• Participate in the governance of the department in areas including risk management, health and safety.
• Ensure all equipment is cleaned and kept in good order, including review of maintenance of key equipment relevant to the role. 
• Postholder will be responsible for undertaking training and education for sonographers, nurse sonographer to a degree level and junior doctors training in ultrasound scan as per their RCOG competences in Gynaecology, including early pregnancy. 
• As clinical specialist be a role model to the other sonographers promote their wider engagement with their stakeholders and the development of CPD activities
• Provide Line management to sonographers in training in the department.
• Postholder will be required to work across sites, such as the Hospital of St Cross in Rugby, City of Coventry Health Centre and other new developments such as the Community Diagnostics Hub. 
• Postholder will be responsible for ensuring consistent quality of service and standardisation of service as per requirements by RCOG and RCR.
