Job overview
We are looking for a Specialty Doctor in Microbiology to work with the Consultant Medical Microbiologists/Consultant Physicians in Medical Microbiology and Consultants in Infection in the delivery of the Clinical Microbiology and Infection Prevention and Control Service.
Our Medical Microbiology team provide a clinical and laboratory microbiology service to the four acute Trusts, and to local general practitioners and community colleagues. There is a separate department of Virology and Molecular Pathology but the two clinical teams work closely together. The Medical Microbiology and Virology/Molecular diagnostics laboratory services are centralised at the UHCWT site in Coventry, but the Clinical Microbiologists can be based at any of the hospitals we serve.

Main duties of the job
The successful candidate wil:
- Support the Clinical Microbiology Consultants in delivering all relevant aspects of the clinical, laboratory, and infection control service for the three Trusts and colleagues in general practice.
- Advise on the appropriate samples to take, antibiotic prescribing, interpretation of results, clinical authorisation of laboratory results, phoning important results, daily ward rounds on Intensive Care, assessment of complex patients on the wards if required and regular MDT participation in other areas such as the Renal Unit, Neurosurgery, Neonatal ITU, infective endocarditis, bone and joint infections, OPAT service and combined infection/Radiology MDT.
- Be expected to be willing to work at any of the three sites as the service requires. The successful candidate would begin at UHCWT to gain knowledge of the laboratory and our large teaching hospital.
- Be required to participate fully in the week night out of hours rota and the weekend rota, which is approximately one night a week and one weekend in five. The specialty doctors are covered by a consultant when they are on-call. This will depend on prior experience.
