Job overview

As the lead specialist for a specific clinical area/speciality for the Obstetric Ultrasound Service (USS), which includes fetal well being unit and fetal medicine, you will ensure there is adequate service provision in place at all times and plan the ultrasound service to meet the demands of the obstetric department. The post holder will be an experienced Sonographer who is high profile, accessible and responsive leader with patient, staff, service and resource responsibility.

As the lead for this department you will ensure the obstetric ultrasound team provide an efficient and high quality ultrasound imaging service, whilst caring for patients in a professional manner. Within this role you will undertake a lead role in education, training, governance, policy review and development.

You will be able to make informed decisions within your own area and scope of professional practice and will support the other sonographers in the provision of a professional ultrasound service. The role of the post holder is to perform and report independently on all scans undertaken.

You will be involved in the clinical training of obstetric USS trainees and junior doctors or medical students. You may also be expected to supervise newly qualified members of staff. You will also be expected to maintain your own continuous professional development (CPD) and take part in other developmental activities as required.

Main duties of the job

1.  The superintendent sonographer provides a highly specialist technical service using ultrasound scans to carry out diagnosis. The sonographer analyses complex data and is expected to obtain maximum possible diagnostic information taking into account any anatomical or pathological limitations.

2.  The superintendent sonographer must possess a high level of specialist knowledge over a wide range of ultrasound procedures and/or the highest-level in-depth expertise in this particular area of ultrasound comparable to senior clinicians.

3.  The superintendent sonographer is required to have the appropriate technical skill to operate the ultrasound machinery safely and effectively.

4. To provide a high standard of obstetric ultrasound services. Display evidence of good anatomical, physiological and pathological knowledge to assist in the clinical justification of ultrasound referrals in line with both national regulations and local protocols.

5.  The superintendent sonographer must carry out and report on obstetric ultrasound scans. These are unsupervised but consultation with peers and referring consultants may be necessary in some difficult cases. These scans may arise from in-patients, out-patients, GP or obstetric referrals.

6. The superintendent sonographer is expected to scan in a variety of settings and locations: scans are performed in the main and satellite departments.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

1.  To liaise with other departments/wards within the hospital and various external sources in order to provide a quality service to patients and clinicians.

2.  To effectively liaise with all disciplines of staff within the obstetric ultrasound and main radiology department

3. To participate in the safe transfer of patients and equipment within the department and hospital respectively, using manual handling guidelines and risk assessment.

4.  Be able to exercise personal responsibility and make decisions in unpredictable and complex situations

5. Maintain knowledge of the equipment to promote safe, effective and efficient handling within the clinical setting, to uphold COSHH (2002), Health and Safety guidelines.

6.  To arrange and chair departmental meetings to comment on departmental related issues.

7. To order and maintain adequate stock levels of necessary consumables for the provision of the service

8.  To report clinical and non-clinical incidents in line with Trust and departmental risk management policies. To investigate clinical and non-clinical incidents within area of control.

9.    To supervise and support sonographers on both professional and clinical matters, offering advice where necessary.

10.  To organise workload in line with clinical and Trust priorities.

11. To adapt and quickly respond to changes in service, patients or departmental need.

12. To reflect on systems of work and communicate areas of deficit or potential advancement.

13.  Justify and prioritise all clinician ultrasound referrals, expediting requests appropriately.

14.  Lead and organise appropriate personnel and outside suppliers in the procurement and evaluation of new ultrasound equipment for the department, giving recommendations where necessary.
