An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated advanced practitioner to join our team of advanced practitioner. Your key focus will entail plain film reporting.

You will be expected to :

To carry out full range of imaging examinations pertinent to specialist area to a consistently high standard, ensuring compliance with imaging protocols.

To teach and supervise radiographers, students, apprentices  and SPR’s

To assume responsibility for reporting own workload and access associated patient pathways.  To liaise with other staff and to be responsible for the day to day organisation of associated speciality area in accordance with Trust/departmental protocols and provide management guidance during the absence of the Lead Radiographer.

Main duties of the job

Main duties Include:

  1. To provide the plain film service with high quality clinical reports for Inpatient Outpatient  and GP service
  2. To perform examinations and imaging, in line with governmental and departmental protocols, working both alone and within radiology and multidisciplinary teams. Liaising with medical nursing and other staff as appropriate.
  3. Be responsible for the operational supervision and management of allocated area, assessing and managing workflow to utilise available resources to deliver prompt efficient and effective service
  4. To participate in request validation, vetting and justification in accordance with departmental protocols.
  5. To check patient identification and documentation and ensure the appropriate radiographic/imaging examinations are carried out in accordance with departmental protocols and clinical requests

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  1. Manage all “designated” procedures to assess patient's needs, adapting and modifying imaging techniques according to the patient's condition. Attending to patients' welfare and safety at all times
  2. To evaluate resultant images for quality, instigating remedial actions as appropriate and alert clinicians of any abnormality as appropriate,
  3. To be accountable for own professional actions and to act as a role model within the department, setting and maintaining high standards of professionalism and patient care and encouraging the development of a strong and flexible multi-disciplinary team.
  4. Regularly helping to develop and draft changes to Plain film protocols, ensuring best practice through evidence-based information
  5. To participate in the departmental Quality Assurance programme to ensure the efficient operation of the highly technical equipment, and to ensure compliance with best practice especially with reference to minimising radiation exposures.
  6. To be familiar with, understand and apply the principles of Radiation Safety, both nationally and locally regulated or protocol led.
  7. To give theoretical instruction, practical guidance, and supervision to less experienced staff, Apprentices, Student Radiographers and trainees, both Radiographic and Medical.
  8. To assist with departmental induction of newly appointed staff.
  9. To participate in the 'Out of Hours' and 'On call' rosters, in line with the departmental agreement, to support full service delivery.
  10. To support 7 day working service delivery.
  11. To support booking/reception staff when responding to queries generated by patients or staff regarding requests for specific modality examinations.
  12. To facilitate communication between the department and all service users, patients, relatives, staff and external users, including any adherence to Trust policies, including participation in annual appraisal/review systems.
  13. Communicate with patients and professional colleagues in situations that may be traumatic due to pressures of work or where the patient’s condition may be a barrier to comprehension and compliance, e.g. Claustrophobia, learning difficulties or injury traumatised.
  14. To assist in the implementation of all manual and electronic information systems ensuring consistently accurate data collection and recording, in support of standard data collection, performance activity, audit and Capacity and demand analysis. Recording patient dosimetry in compliance with local requirements for dose reference levels.
  15. To attend specialist MDT meetings and Radiologist audit meetings, contributing to peer review and specialist service redesign/modernisation planning.
  16. To actively pursue individual CPD maintain specialist awareness of imaging development and promote wider education/CPD by holding tutorials with Radiographic staff

  • To be aware of the implications of COSHH and the Health and Safety at Work Act and ensure their guidelines are followed.
  • To minimize hazards in the working area and report any identifiable hazards to the line manager.  To adhere to all safe systems of work applicable to the work area.
  • To participate in the investigation of complaints and untoward incidents.

Education, Training and Development:

  • To participate in pre and postgraduate training of qualified staff where appropriate.
  • To regularly contribute to the departments CPD programme.
  • To provide supervision to support staff as appropriate.
  • To ensure that professional and technical knowledge and expertise is kept up to date by attending meetings and study days and by reading professional journals.
  • Participate in Departmental Audit.
