Job overview

Applications are invited for this full time clinical technologist post in the Radiology Physics. Suitable candidates will preferably have attained qualification as a clinical technologist. Candidates who are yet to achieve qualification, will also be considered for appointment at a lower grade in the first instance with necessary training supported.

Radiology Physics is based in a large teaching hospital in the West Midlands and provides diagnostic x-ray, MRI & ultrasound support and radiation protection advice across the whole of Coventry & Warwickshire, covering four acute hospital sites and several local private hospitals and veterinary practices. There are plenty of opportunities for collaborative working and we have active collaborations with both Warwick University and Coventry University.

Please be advised that candidates who are yet to achieve qualification will be considered for the role in a training capacity. If appointed as a trainee, you will be paid at 60% of the top of the Qualified rate, which equates to £20,748.60, for three years until the qualification is achieved. Upon completion of the qualification, you will be uplifted to the Qualified rate at Band 5.

Main duties of the job

 The main roles of this post will be to:

  • Participate in Radiology Physics Quality Assurance and optimisation programme.
  • Provide support to the Medical Physics Experts and Radiation Protection Advisor in the provision of scientific and technical advice in radiology physics and radiation protection.
  • Provide effective input into the work of the Trust, to support the achievement of our vision and values.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

• To carry out quality assurance surveys on general plain x-ray equipment, dental x-ray equipment, mobile image intensifiers and medical image display devices.
• To assist with quality assurance surveys on highly complex diagnostic imaging equipment such as fluoroscopy, CT, mammography and other complex x-ray equipment
• To produce written reports of the routine quality assurance (QA) surveys, and to assist in producing reports on complex equipment. This involves the analysis and interpretation of the test results from the QC surveys. This may require further more complex tests / investigations if any problems are identified.  Initially this analysis will be undertaken on site to advise users if equipment fails or is dangerous.  More complex analysis is undertaken back at University Hospital, sometimes using bespoke software, and a formal report will be generated, along with any recommendations to the users.  This report will need to communicate complex information to non-technical users, and also specific technical information to service engineers. The results should also be discussed with service users as required.
• Deal with any technical queries from service users referring more complex problems to a senior member of the technical or scientific team.
• To assist with the audit and assessment of patient doses in diagnostic radiology.  This complex non-routine task involves collation of data and manipulation in spreadsheets to generate reference levels.
• To assist with the arrangement of the annual calibration of test equipment and the cross calibration of radiation measurement equipment.
• To assist with the measurement of environmental radiation doses and activities in all areas. This involves mostly non-routine activities as the radiation source, nature and environment vary tremendously.
• To assist with the administration of the equipment survey programme (includes both ionising and non-ionising equipment). This involves booking surveys across the region, negotiating equipment availability with external staff and assigning staff availability.
• To assist with other administrative duties of the group.
• To assist with management of the personal radiation monitoring program.  This includes issue and return of monitors, the generation of complex and detailed reports to highlight unusual or unexpected results, and participate in the initial investigation.
• To assist with the investigation of the possible overexposure of staff.
• To use x-ray equipment, radioactive sources and measurement equipment in a manner which is safe for: themselves, other staff, the general public and the equipment itself; and to leave such equipment in a state which is safe for: other staff, patients and the general public.
• Undertake and provide support for Research and Development being undertaken within the service.
• Keep relevant scientific and technical records of all work performed.
