Main duties of the job

  • To be an integral part of the Planned Community Therapy Leadership Team, providing specialist professional management/supervision for Speech and Language Therapists within the team. 
  •  To provide advanced speech and language therapy assessment treatments and review for patients referred into the service with speech, language, communication, and swallowing needs. This will be for patients predominantly in their place of residence but will include clinic and other settings. 
  •  To provide expert advice and guidance to patients, carers, health and social care professionals from across multiple providers internal and external to the organisation.
  •  To be involved in identifying gaps in the service and assisting with service improvement to develop the service in line with national and local strategies. 
  • To support and contribute toward service development and meeting Key Performance Indicators. To undertake and support specialist professional development of the staff within the service and across the Integrated Community Services as required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Planning and Organisational Skills 

•    Accept clinical responsibility for a designated caseload of adults and to organise this effectively and efficiently with regard to clinical priorities and time available, delegating appropriately within the team. 

•    Manage several patients at any given time, including organising goal setting and reviews; ensuring that information is shared between all involved clinicians as appropriate. 

•    Coordinate all aspects of Speech and Language patient care with other external agencies, patient, and carers as appropriate. 

•    To be flexible to the demands of the environment including unpredictable work patterns, deadlines, and frequent interruptions.

Physical Skills

•    Is expected to be skilled in the use of a keyboard for producing electronically formatted documents.

•    Required to be skilled in delivering physical interventions in line with speech and language therapy assessments and interventions. Demonstrating highly developed dexterity, co-ordination and palpatory sense for assessment and manual treatment.

•    Required to be skilled in carrying out basic life support in emergency situations where required.

•    Physical coordination, strength and understanding of sensory skills, body movements and abilities to work with clients in tasks used as assessments and/or that develop skills.

•    To have moving and handling skills to move, position and treat patients with physical and cognitive impairments.
