Job overview

You will work closely with other members of the technical team to develop, support, and maintain AWS infrastructure for a Java-based application in a cloud based environment.

Your role will involve ensuring the reliability, scalability, and security of our AWS setup, leveraging automation and best practices in cloud infrastructure. This includes supporting database administration, optimising performance, and contributing to a robust CI/CD pipeline to streamline development and deployment.

You’ll play a key part in evolving our infrastructure to meet future demands, aligning with strategic goals for efficiency and scalability.

 

Main duties of the job

The main duties of this role involve maintaining, developing, and enhancing our AWS cloud infrastructure with a focus on stability, scalability, and security. You will use tools like Ansible and CloudFormation to automate deployments, streamline infrastructure management, and ensure consistency.

As a key point of contact for technical service matters, you will provide essential support to keep IT systems, infrastructure, and services running smoothly, addressing issues to minimise downtime and maintain high availability.

This role requires both strategic oversight and hands-on management of AWS resources, including cloud compute, cloud storage, and Oracle RDS. You will optimise various cloud compute and storage solutions for performance and efficient resource use, and manage multiple operating systems, including Windows and Linux, to ensure smooth operations.

You will implement secure cloud networking configurations, managing VPCs, subnets, and security groups to maintain data integrity and support secure connectivity.

Collaboration with technical team members is essential to uphold best practices in cloud infrastructure management. You will actively seek opportunities to improve and evolve the AWS environment, aligning it with organisational goals and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Education / Training / Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Educated to Masters level or equivalent level of experience of working at a senior level in specialist area
  • Extensive knowledge of specialist areas, acquired through post graduate diploma or equivalent experience or training plus further specialist knowledge or experience to master’s level equivalent
  • Evidence of post qualifying and continuing professional development
  • Member of relevant professional bod
Desirable criteria
  • Cloud Certification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Demonstrated capability to plan over short, medium and long-term timeframes and adjust plans and resource requirements accordingly
  • Experience of identifying and interpreting National policy
  • Experience of researching best practice (globally, private and public sector), interpreting its relevance and processes/ practices which could be implemented successfully to achieve system reform (advising on policy implementation)
  • Previously responsible for a budget, involved in budget setting and working knowledge of financial processes
Desirable criteria
  • Comprehensive experience of project principles techniques and tools such as Prince 2 and Managing Successful Projects
  • Solid proven experience of working in a Linux based technical design and support role
  • Experience in building and maintaining scalable, highly available web application infrastructure.

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Must have an understanding of the background to and aims of current healthcare policy and appreciate the implications of this on engagement
  • Should have an appreciation of the relationship between the Department of Health, the Strategic Health Authority and individual provider and the commissioning organisations
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office with intermediate keyboard skills.
  • Needs to have a thorough understanding of and commitment to equality of opportunity and good working relationships both in terms of day-to-day working practices.
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of ISO standards and how they apply in the role (9001, 2000, 27001)
