Main duties of the job

  • Ensure patient safety is maintained.
  • To undertake assessment, planning and evaluation of patients
  • To promote a culture of demonstrable best practice and integrated evidence based practice.
  • To provide clinical advice, support and education to professions/ staff and patients.
  • Work collaboratively and co-operatively with clinical colleagues within the ward.
  • To have an understanding of the Mental Capacity Act and Deprivation of Liberty and be able to apply to this in clinical practice.
  • To have an understanding of safeguarding, being able to appropriately identify those patients at risk, managing referrals and assist with investigations in line with Trust Policy and Procedure.
  • To provide support and care for the patient and his/her family respecting their need for privacy and dignity.
  • Be professionally responsible for adherence to Trust policies and procedures.
  • Produce written communications which are clear, fluent, concise and easily understood.
  • Carry out nursing procedures and treatments in accordance with approved procedures.
  • Ensure the delivery of evidence-based nursing care in accordance with NMC Code of Professional Conduct within the clinical care area as an autonomous practitioner.
  • To continue own professional development in line with NMC guidelines and NMC revalidation.
  • Maintain clinical competence of self and others as determined by service need and job descriptions. Tasks to include male catheterisation, ECG, IV administration, Cannulation.

  • To assist with the management of ward resources in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Ensure information on the ward information system is correct and updated regularly.
  • Undertake staff appraisals and create a learning environment which facilitates learning and professional development.

Person specification

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Professional clinical experience in working within surgical environment
  • A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence based practice
  • A sound knowledge of professional policies and procedures
  • Knowledge of clinical governance and a commitment to clinical supervision and staff development
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to successfully manage people
  • Experience in participating in service improvement
  • Knowledge and experience in Elective surgery Enhanced care

Qualification and Professional Training

Essential criteria
  • First level degree or willingness to undertaken
  • Current Professional Registration working as a band 5 or above for minimum of 2 years
  • Evidence of continuous professional development
  • To have the skills and knowledge to undertake supervision and assessing of staff and patients within scope of practice or willingness to develop
