Main duties of the job

  • The main purpose of the post is to further develop and support the expansion of existing gastroenterology and hepatology services and provide support for a 24/7 acute GI bleed service.
  • There is a need within the department for the expansion of hepatology services and other gastroenterology subspecialty would be supported. An interest in ERCP and EUS is is desirable and further interest in advanced endoscopy would be welcome.
  • The successful candidate will be responsible, in conjunction with Dr Sankara Raman, Dr Edmond Sung, Dr Matilda Beckley, Dr Noor Hossain, Dr Shakil Kathawala, Dr Kayal Asghar and Dr Gordon Wood for running a comprehensive district general hospital gastroenterology service. This includes a direct access endoscopy service, a fast-track two week referral service for the patients with possible gastrointestinal cancer and support for the colorectal multi-disciplinary team meeting.
  • The post holder will also provide support for the development and establishment of the Gastroenterology Day Unit, providing subacute management of patients with urgent gastroenterology and hepatology needs avoiding acute admission and timely management of acutely unwell patients.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Take on-going responsibility for patients under his/her care.
  • Provide additional support for existing Gastroenterology services and develop and establish subspecialty gastroenterology interests which may include hepatology. Development of EUS/ERCP skills are encouraged.
  • Provide support for the existing GI bleed 24/7 on call service, with a 1 in 6 rota.
  • Participate in endoscopy training and develop faculty training skills to participate in JAG accredited endoscopy courses.
  • Provide a consultation service and advisory service to other clinical colleagues in other specialties within the Trust and Primary Care.
  • Develop and maintain collaborative relationships with medical colleagues in other specialties and participate in regular clinical meetings and other post graduate activities.
  • Develop and maintain good communications with General practitioners and appropriate external agencies.
  • Participate in the development of the care of patients arriving as emergencies.
  • Participate and encourage two way communications encompassing briefing systems as appropriate.
  • Comply with all relevant Trust Policies and Procedures.
  • Ensure that all trust wide standards are maintained to improve the quality of total care to all who come into contact with services provided by GEH.
  • Ensure compliance with all appropriate legal and statutory requirements, including Health and Safety, Standing financial Instructions and Incident Reporting.
  • Share responsibility for data protection arising out of the use of computers.
  • Demonstrate a firm involvement in Clinical Governance, Risk Management and Clinical Audit – this will include the development and maintenance of appropriate systems and practices to ensure continued safe clinical practice.
  • Take responsibility for the professional supervision and development of trainee doctors and other staff within the specialty. This will include the appraisal of doctors in training, and the Certificates of Satisfaction in respect of foundation year doctors.
  • Ensure own practice is up-to-date which will include taking responsibility for own Continuous Professional Development and participating in the Trust’s Performance and Annual Review system.
  • Participate in the continuing professional development scheme of an appropriate medical college and the Trust & University Joint Appraisal scheme. 
  • The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education as laid down by the Royal College of Physicians and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities.

Education and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS (or equivalent)
  • Entry on GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date must be within 6 months of interview) – CESR or European Community Rights.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP Intercollegiate or equivalent
  • An appropriate higher degree (MD, PhD or equivalent)

Experience & Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Thorough & broad training in Gastroenterology
  • Teaching and commitment to education post- and under- graduate levels

  • Higher qualification in education
