Job Title-Chemotherapy Staff Nurse- Dorothea

Hours per week-Full time 37.5 hours per week Permanent 

Salary- £28,407 -  £34,581 Per Annum

We are seeking an experienced Registered Nurses to join our team on the Dorothea Chemotherapy Unit. Chemotherapy experience desirable but not essential.

You will have a strong commitment to excellence in patient care and a high level of communication skills, as you act as the interface between patients and other healthcare professionals.

  • Responsible for the assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care for a specified group of patients.
  • Takes charge of the Day Unit as delegated by the Lead Chemotherapy Nurse for a specified period of time.
  • Act as a Team Leader, delegating appropriate tasks and supervising the standard of care delivered by more junior qualified staff, unqualified staff and learner nurses in the team.
  • Assist the Lead Chemotherapy Nurses in the management of preceptorship of newly qualified staff, return to nursing staff and the mentorship of nursing students and health care support workers.
  • Responsible for the administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main duties and Responsibilities

1. Clinical

  • Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound
    evidence base
    To have appropriate skills in the care of the Haematology or Oncology patient to include:
    - Insertion of peripheral cannulate
    -Venipuncture
    -Venesection
     -Management of central venous access devices with appropriate advice, teaching,
    assessment of patients or other health care professionals in the delivery of care
    -Checking and administration of cytotoxic drugs and other supportive treatments
    -Counselling patients offering psychological and physiological support of problems
    and side effects during treatment and thereafter
    -Administration of blood products
    -Preparing patients and equipment for procedures
    -Monitoring patients for signs of adverse reactions, sensitivity, compatibility of
    drugs and/ or investigations
    -Order and collate results of blood tests appropriate to management of treatment
  • Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing
    assessment of the physical, social and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate
  • Ensuring patients receive appropriate written information for their investigation, condition, diagnosis
  • Creates and utilises opportunities to promote health and well-being of patients in their care
  • Leads a nursing team to manage a group of patients throughout a shift
  • Undertakes a prime role in the psychological and compassionate care of patients, their relatives and team members in meeting their respective needs
  • Contributes towards effective running of the unit
  • Working within the NMC Guidelines and Trust policies recognising one’s own abilities
    and limitations
  • Maintains a good standard of communication and interpersonal relationships with the
    multidisciplinary team and respect the confidentiality of patients, relatives and colleagues

2. Managerial

  • Ensure that all staff work within the policies and procedures of the Trust and in line with NMC guidance
  • Ensure that adequate resources are available to meet the needs of the patients
  • Ensure that all equipment for patient use is kept in good working order in line with EEC regulations
  • Ensure that an adequate skill mix is available to meet the needs of the patients. Make
    every effort to remedy deficits should they arise. If deficits are irresolvable contact the appropriate senior nursing staff for support
  • Ensure that concerns and complaints from patients, visitors or colleagues are resolved
    where possible and reported to the Unit Manager/ Matron
  • Be conversant with all Trust Emergency procedures
  • Comply with Trust Manual Handling policy
  •  Use computerised systems to support the provision of patient care and treatment
  • Coordination of investigations, treatments and appointments
  • Coordination of haematology/ oncology clinics
  • Assist with collating and monitoring clinical trials and data appropriate within the
    specialist of haematology and oncology and liaising with the Trials team

3. Education and Training


  • Maintaining a positive attitude to continuing professional education in order to enhance knowledge, skills and attitudes needed for safe and effective nursing practice
  • Be aware of current developments and issues
  • Maintaining standards by ensuring that evidence-based practice underpins all nursing
    interventions
  • Participate in Trust Appraisal System
  • Possess a clear understanding of clinical governance in relation to standards of care,
    support of colleagues and audit of given care
  • Participate in the utilisation, evaluation and conduct of audit and research
  • To take responsibility for own personal development and training need


4. Professional

  • Ensures that the Lead Chemotherapy Nurse/ Chemotherapy Sister/ Charge Nurse is
    informed of any professional concerns at the earliest opportunity
  • Ensure that PREP requirement for NMC registrations is adhered to
  • To act as an ambassador for the clinical environment promoting a professional image of nursing
