Main duties and Responsibilities

Clinical

1.       Deliver a high standard of nursing care without direct supervision, based upon a sound evidence base.

2.       Undertakes and documents a comprehensive, systematic and accurate nursing assessment of the physical social and spiritual needs of the patient where appropriate.

3.       Creates and utilizes opportunities to promote health and well being of patients in their care.

4.       Influence and monitor the standards of direct patient care delivery in accordance with best practice and operational protocols and guidelines.

5.       Working within the NMC / HPC Guidelines and Trust Policies recognising one's own abilities and limitations.

6.       Promote good working relationships within the nursing teams providing appropriate advice and support.

7.       Facilitate the development of standards of care and assist with the implementation of appropriate monitoring techniques.

8.       Participate in clinical trials of equipment, audit, and training for staff

9.       Leads a nursing team to care for a group of patients throughout a shift.

10.   To ensure 24-hour cover, working rotational shifts to include earlies, lates, nights, weekends and Bank Holidays.

11.   To facilitate and build team working between the Theatre Staff and the multidisciplinary team to effect high standards of care.

Clinical Leadership

1.       Planning the appropriate skill mix and staffing levels using competent duty rostering skills.

2.       Deputise for the Senior Team Leader/Matron in his/her absence.

3.       As part of the Directorate Team assist with the development and implementation of the Trust's Business Plan and Strategy for Nursing.

4.       Assist with the management of Unit resources in an efficient and effective manner.

5.       Participate in the out of hour's operational cover and bleep roster for the Trust as appropriate.

6.       Support Senior Team Leader/Matron in the investigation of complaints within the Theatre area.

7.       Ensure information on the Ward/Department Information System is correct and updated regularly when relevant.

8.       To undertake delegated responsibility for resource management.

9.       To assist the Matron to review staffing requirements.

10.   To support the Matron to initiate and prioritise modernisation developments within the Service as part of the business/strategic planning process.

11.   Ensuring staffing levels within the Operating Theatre Department are adequate to provide safe and effective care delivery. Maximising the resources that are available by competent duty rostering.

12.   Through effective negotiation and political awareness create an environment for partnership working and dissemination of information across multidisciplinary teams,

13.   Responsible in the retention, selection and recruitment of new staff for obstetric theatres in conjunction with training lead

Education and Training

1.       To ensure own competence and own personal development plan is reviewed and discussed with Matron annually.

2.       To facilitate, maintain and audit the delivery and effectiveness of clinical care in accordance with the care standards, operational protocols and guidelines (EOC - Essence of care).

3.       Create a learning environment, which actually facilitates learning and structured personal development for all staff and learners.

4.       Facilitate the development of practice founded on up-to-date information and research.

5.       To act as a resource, support and advice all theatre staff within their roles

6.       Teach, instruct, assess, review theatre practice for all theatre staff

Professional

1.       To act as an ambassador for the clinical environment and the Trust, where appropriate, by promoting a professional image,

2.       Ensures current registration with NMC/HPC

Human Resources

1.       Participate on an interview panel for recruitment

RISK ASSESSMENT

·         Standing for long periods of time

·         Use of computer and associated equipment

·         Moving/lifting heavy/awkward objects e.g. instrument trays  Frequent exposure to highly unpleasant working conditions

·         Risk of exposure to chemicals, ie. formaldehyde

Relationships

All theatre staff

All HSDU staff

Patients and their relatives/carers

Surgeons and anaesthetists

Ward and other departmental staff

Liaise with Matrons/On-Site Nurses/General Managers and on-call Directors as appropriate to

ensure patients receive optimum care.

Representatives from appropriate forms and companies.
