Are you looking for a fantastic opportunity to work as a clinical psychologist within a friendly and compassionate stroke rehabilitation team? Do you have an interest in Neuropsychology and are looking for  a new challenge working on a Stroke rehabilitation ward? Dependant on previous relevant knowledge and experience, psychologists that will be newly qualified are also encouraged to get in touch. 

(For candidates looking for full -time hours there may be additional hours avaliable within community stroke services in the North Warwickshire area with SWFT ) 

Due to substantial investment as part of the centralisation of stroke services in Coventry & Warwickshire, an opportunity has arisen to provide neuropsychology input into our stroke rehabilitation unit at the George Elliot Hospital, Nuneaton.  

We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative individual who would like to work alongside MDT colleagues on our inpatient stroke rehabilitation ward at George Elliot Hospital. The postholder will be part of the wider neuropsychology team based at UHCW. 

The successful applicant will have roles across inpatient acute and rehabilitation stroke services. The Neuropsychology team serves both UHCW and Inpatient Stroke Rehabilitation at George Elliot Hospital. This includes services for the Major Trauma Centre, Neurosurgery, Stroke and Neurology. 

Main duties of the job

This role forms an essential part of Coventry and Warwickshire's  centralised stroke pathway. It will require a clinician skilled in communication and keen to work with others to develop integrated processes for the benefit of stroke patients and their families. You will work alongside multidisciplinary colleagues to determine the cognitive, emotional and behavioural consequences of stroke and develop individually tailored rehabilitation plans for patients.

Ideally, you are looking to develop your neuropsychology knowledge and skills as an experienced clinician.  Your development is central to our thoughts, and you will receive regular supervision and mentoring by senior psychologists as part of the Neuropsychology Department at UHCW. You will have access to a wide range of training opportunities to develop your clinical practice and we are passionate about developing your skills in leadership and service improvement. Support for QiCN accreditation will be available for the right candidate.

The post-holder will be required to work autonomously at George Elliot Hospital. You will however be joining a friendly and dynamic Neuropsychology team with excellent support provided for your development. We also have excellent administrative support for the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

We welcome applicants who with a specialist interest in Neuropsychology and those looking for part-time and flexible arrangements. 

You will have the opportunity to:

  • • Develop in-depth knowledge of the impact of stroke on the brain
  • • Develop skills in assessment of patients following stroke and expand your existing knowledge of neuropsychological evaluation more broadly.
  • • Develop your skills in neuropsychological formulation and planning treatment
  • • Develop your ability to develop others and disseminate psychological knowledge and skills

The post holder will join a large, expanding and dynamic department of Physical Health Psychologists and Neuropsychologists. This comes with chances for shared learning and development as well as the opportunity to influence psychologically-informed initiatives across the Trust.

To provide high quality specialist Neuropsychology services to patients following stroke as a part of the services offered by the Neuropsychology Department.

The post holder will be expected to deliver specialist neuropsychological assessment and interventions; psychological assessment and therapy and offer advice and consultation on patient’s psychological care to all multidisciplinary colleagues, to patient families, and to other significant carers.

The post involves working with full clinical autonomy within professional guidelines within the overall framework of the team’s policies and procedures

The post requires giving feedback to acute survivors of stroke and their families and working with them in a rehabilitative context toward recovery in an inpatient hospital setting. 

The post involves supporting the psychological distress that comes with that process including coping with physical, psychological and cognitive

It also involves dealing with complex behavioural changes that occur as a result of stroke and the psychological effect this also has on family members.

The role involves providing psychological and neuropsychological therapy as appropriate to individual patients and their families as appropriate to each case; and as such involves the hearing, working with and processing of high levels of psychological distress and emotional and physical pain.
