Job overview

Clinical Psychologist – Band 8a (1.5 WTE).  (We will consider applications from candidates who would prefer to work reduced hours and those who are newly qualified and would like to come in on a preceptorship, Band 7-8a)

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a clinical psychologist to work within Older Adult Mental Health and Dementia inpatient Wards . Working in inpatient mental health is a great use of all skills we have as psychologists; it’s a great place to learn and develop. The role is diverse, stimulating, and thought-provoking. If you’re passionate about working with older adults both those with dementia or those with a broad range of mental health presentations, enjoy working with the MDT undertake shared formulations and clinical supervision, then this is the role for you. You will have a significant role working with the ward MDT to develop collaborative, trauma informed formulations, that inform least restrictive patient care. We’re keen to recruit people with an interest and experience of working with older people with cognitive and or mental health challenges.  You’re also very welcome to come and meet some of the team and see the environment you could be working in.

Main duties of the job

  • Main duties of the job

    The post holder will deliver specialist psychological assessments, formulations and interventions, working alongside a Principal Clinical Psychologist. The post holder ideally will have skills in neuro-psychological assessment and working with behaviours that indicate distress in older people.  You will offer training to the Ward Team, Reflective Practice and support with service evaluations and audits. You will be a valued member of the MDT, working alongside Nurses, Occupational Therapists, Social Workers, Psychiatrists, Physiotherapists and Speech and Language Therapy. The post holder will have access to supervision from a Principal Clinical Psychologist.  They will be offered training and CPD opportunities within the mental health trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Direct assessment and formulation work with complex service users.
  • Provide clinical supervision to more junior team members and other members of the MDT.
  • Lead on psychologically informed team formulation.
  • Contribute to QIPs, relevant audits, and research on ward.
  • Deliver psychologically informed training.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • DClin Psych or equivalent qualification in clinical psychology OR doctorate in counselling psychology
  • Registration with the HCPC as a Practitioner Psychologist

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and awareness of a range of psychological models and how they may apply in clinical practice.
  • Well developed ability to communicate sensitive information to patients, carers and colleagues in a way that addresses psychological resistance and combines appropriate assertion and diplomacy.
  • Able to interact effectively with staff from all disciplines.
  • Able to build and sustain relationships with people with psychological problems.
  • Ability to plan and organise work independently, reliably, and consistently with work agreed and managed at regular intervals.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with adults presenting with a range of clinical severity.
  • Experience of working in inpatient settings.
  • Experience of tailoring psychological assessment and intervention to individual needs.
  • Experience of maintaining professionalism in challenging circumstances.
