Locum Consultant in Radiology

Locum Consultant

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is one of the top performing organisations within the NHS. Our staff think this is a great place to work and we hope you will agree. We have recently been rated as 'Outstanding' by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) following our most recent inspection.

We provide services across Warwickshire and beyond ranging from Hospitals in Warwick, Stratford-Upon-Avon, Royal Leamington Spa and Shipston-on Stour to Community Services across the whole county. This includes our Community Teams in North Warwickshire.

We are a progressive, expanding organisation with great ambition around improving quality, integrating pathways and delivering high levels of productivity. Over 6000 people work for the Trust and many of them have been here a long time. People find they don’t need to go elsewhere to find a fulfilling career in healthcare.

The first thing you will notice about us is how we take our values seriously. We believe that our values underpin everything we do. If you are interested in a role with us you need to make sure our values match your own.

Our values can be summed up in one sentence. We are ‘Trusted to provide inclusive, safe, effective and compassionate care’. Throughout the recruitment process you will be asked to think about how you demonstrate these values and how they impact on your work. It doesn’t matter what role you do, whether it is patient facing or not, we are all working in the same way with our values at the core.

Probationary Period

All new staff to the Trust will be subject to a standard 6 month probationary period, the details of which will duly follow in your contract of employment.

Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion

South Warwickshire University NHS Foundation Trust is committed to creating and sustaining a positive and inclusive working environment for all our employees. Our aim is to ensure that employees are equally valued and respected and that our organisation is representative of all members of society. We define diversity as valuing everyone as an individual – we value our employees, job applicants, students, patients and visitors as people. This is reflected within our values of being Inclusive, Safe, Effective, Compassionate and Trusted.

Agile and Flexible Working

All our staff will have a work base. However the Trust operates as an Agile Working Team therefore staff may be working from home on a regular basis as required by the service. However, occasionally travel around Warwickshire and into your base will be required so access to your own transport would be helpful.

The Trust also welcome staff to work flexibly and we would welcome the conversation at interview regarding flexible working.

Staff Benefits

The Trust offer a wide range of additional benefits to staff. Anyone who joins us on a substantive basis can assess things such as the Lease Car Scheme, Electronics Scheme, Discounted Leisure and Travel, Cycle to work scheme amongst many others available.

Car Parking

The Trust have recently completed the construction of a multi-storey car park at our Warwick Hospital site which has allowed us to reduce waiting times for car parking passes.

Job overview

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant in Radiology. The post holder will support the general workload in the department this will include plain film reporting, cross sectional imaging, and ultrasound, but sub-speciality interests are welcome.

The department is happy to provide support to any candidates wishing to apply for CESR. The department has previously supported candidates who have gone on to successfully complete the CESR programme

Main duties of the job

The post will support the general workload in the department and will include plain film reporting, cross sectional imaging, and ultrasound, but sub-speciality interests are welcome.  The weekly timetable is variable, and the content of the clinical session may change dependent upon service need following workload planning meetings.

The Trust has implemented seven day working for all consultant medical staff.  To support this Consultant Radiologist also provide timetabled sessions on site to deliver imaging for In-patients and Ambulatory Care patients on weekends and bank holidays.  Implementation of weekend working led to the outsourcing of the on-call service overnight from 9 pm to 7 am.   The working day is being extended from 8 am to 7 pm and the post holders will be expected to participate in this departmental timetable.

Due to the now large geographical area which the Trust manages, the post holder may be required to work at any of the Trust sites and must be able to respond to on call in line with National Terms and Conditions of Service.

Working for our organisation

With our central location and great transport links we’re closer than you might think. We are located in the heart of England with easy access to the motorway network and a good railway service. Warwickshire is accessible from a number of nearby cities including Birmingham, Leicester, Northampton, Oxford and Worcester.

Surrounded by a collection of picturesque towns and villages, there is always a lot to see and do across the county. Numerous sport and leisure venues, theatres, parks, and great shopping facilities make Warwickshire an idyllic place to work and live.

As well as enjoying where you work, we want all of our staff to lead happy and healthy lives. We offer a number of benefits to support this, such as flexible working opportunities and onsite subsidised restaurants at our hospitals in Warwick and Leamington Spa as well as a number of other schemes.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

On-call cover will be shared with colleagues and is currently a 1 in 10 rota.  There are departmental laptop computers which can be used for viewing CT images remotely when on-call.  There are also processes taking place to allow home reporting. Some cross site working will be required, such as at the Stratford Hospital site

There are regular reporting discrepancy meetings in line with the current RCR guidelines, and each consultant is expected to take an active part in these meetings. These are regularly currently held on a Wednesday and are part of SPA activity, as are monthly Radiology Management meetings

Currently there are three radiology trainees based at SWFT and there are opportunities to undertake teaching for them.  Meetings are usually held in the hospital post-graduate centre where there are two large lecture rooms, tutorial rooms and a dining area.  There is a separate medical school block containing lecture and tutorial rooms.  All of the teaching rooms have computers with access to the hospital PACS system.

Warwick Hospital plays a key role in the teaching and examination of graduate entry medical students from the University of Warwick and the University of Buckingham. There may be the opportunity for the post holder to take part in undergraduate teaching or radiology registrar training if appropriate.
