Applications are invited for the above post of Consultant Clinical Oncologist with an interest in breast, based at the Sussex Cancer Centre at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton but with sessions throughout the University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust.


The “Sussex Cancer Centre Oncology Service” is a team of oncologists who are employed through University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust working across the county providing clinical and medical oncology care to the population of Sussex. This includes provision of non-surgical cancer treatments across 5 hospital locations - Brighton, Haywards Heath, Worthing, Hastings, Eastbourne, and acute service support in Chichester. 


The new appointee will work alongside colleagues in the Breast site reference group which comprises of a mutliprofessional team including clinical oncologists, medical oncologists, pharmacists, clinical nurse specialists and cancer support workers. 


The appointee will have an On Call Commitment at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on a >1:9 rota (currently 1:17).

Main duties of the job

The appointee will join the team of 30 Clinical/medical consultant oncologists who work across Sussex (Worthing, Brighton, Haywards Heath, Eastbourne and Hastings) in delivering a comprehensive oncology service for patients from across the Trust. Key duties will include regular outpatient clinics, clinical trial leadership and delivery, MDT attendance, SACT prescribing and Radiotherapy planning oversight, clinical supervision of non-medical staff, clinical governance, service developments, ward reviews and on call. It is anticipated that the post holder will look to take on leadership/development roles within the division and will be supported to do so. It is also anticipated that they will take an active role in education for trainees at all grades. 
 
The appointee will contribute to teaching and supervision of medical students, junior medical staff and AHP/nurses.
 
 
Applicants are encouraged to take part in Audit and support junior team members in their Audit projects.  There are opportunities for clinical cancer research and will be supported by a divisional lead for research.

Experience & Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • • Basic medical degree
  • • MB BS, FRCR or appropriate specialist qualification
  • • Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice
  • • CCT in clinical oncology or equivalent
  • • Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register or eligibility for entry within 6 months of the date of the AAC
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree

Clinical Skills & Experience

Essential criteria
  • • Evidence of training in broad spectrum of clinical oncology tumour sites
  • • Interest and training suitable for a CNS cancer Clinical oncology post

Knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty
