Senior Clinical Fellow in Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Surgery

NHS Medical & Dental: Senior Clinical Fellow

Trosolwg o'r swydd

Applications are invited for a Senior Clinical Fellow post in Foot and Ankle Surgery starting from 2nd October 2024

Our Senior Fellow Posts are all full-time posts at 48 hours per week; this includes 4 hours of non-rostered time per week for CPD such as research and quality improvement projects as well as traditional teaching. The post holder will have limited on-call duties at the Level 1 MTC at RSCH and will therefore be expected to be up to date with the management of complex trauma. Possession of FRCS (T&O) and ATLS is a requirement for the post.

Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Fellowship Post

There are currently four Orthopaedic Surgeons specialising in foot and ankle surgery. Three specialise mainly in Elective adult foot and ankle pathology and one specialising in the management of lower limb trauma with a sub specialist interest in foot and ankle.

The Brighton Foot & Ankle Unit (BFAU) represents an integrated group of surgeons who differ between them in their training and approach to foot and ankle care.  Surgical procedures range from forefoot reconstruction, arthroscopy, ankle arthroplasty to deformity correction with internal fixation and external fixation. We are also the first centre in the UK to pioneer minimally invasive surgery in Foot and Ankle under the guidance of Joel Vernois. We are a tertiary referral centre for complex foot and ankle trauma and perform complex neurological and charcot foot reconstructions.

The Foot and Ankle Fellow together with an Orthopaedic Specialist Registrars will have responsibility for overseeing care of patients under the care of BFAU. The post holder will be closely supervised in outpatients and in the operating theatre.  It is expected that over the tenure of the post the successful candidate will undertake an increasing level of independent practise dependent upon progress along with operating independently in parallel lists.

Ideally the first 6 months will be spent between Trauma and doing open surgery whilst the second 6 months will include more minimally invasive work.

The Fellow also undertakes an independent Research clinic Friday mornings in an area of their choice along with the Virtual Fracture Clinic.

Teaching Commitments

As a teaching hospital teaching of medical students, junior doctors, nurses and physiotherapists will be required.

 Audit Research

Time will be made available weekly to allow research.  It is expected that the Fellow will complete a research and audit project for presentation at a National meeting and a possible publication.  At the end of the fellowship it is expected that a summary presentation of the fellow’s clinical experience and research will be presented to the department.  These are requirements for successful completion of the fellowship.

These are redesigned roles in the T&O department and have been structured based upon the rota and design of the clinical fellow jobs in ED at RSCH.

Gweithio i'n sefydliad

UHS (East) is the regional teaching NHS Trust working across two sites:  the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.  The Brighton campus includes the Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital and the Sussex Eye Hospital and is the regional Major Trauma centre within the National Major Trauma Network.

We provide general acute services to our local populations in and around the City of Brighton and Hove, Mid Sussex and the western part of East Sussex and more specialised and tertiary services for patients across Sussex and the southeast of England.

Both hospitals provide many of the same acute services for their local populations.  In addition, the Princess Royal is our centre for elective orthopaedic surgery and our hip fracture unit and the Royal Sussex County Hospital is our centre for major trauma, specialist orthopaedic trauma and critical care.  Our specialised and tertiary services include orthopaedics, neurosciences, paediatrics, cardiac, cancer, renal, vascular surgery, infectious diseases and HIV medicine.

Details of workload are given in the previous section.  However the post holder accepts that he / she will also perform duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances at the request of the appropriate consultant, in consultation, where practicable, with his / her colleagues, both senior and junior. While it has been agreed between the professions that they will perform such duties, the Secretary of State stresses that additional commitments arising under this sub-section are exceptions and in particular that juniors should not be required to undertake work of this kind for prolonged periods or on a regular basis.
