Job overview

We are looking for a committed and enthusiastic team-player to join our busy, dynamic Maxillofacial Unit.
This is a full-time, substantive Specialty Doctor post in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery based in West Sussex, at St. Richard's Hospital, but with activity also scheduled at Worthing Hospital and Southlands Hospital in Shoreham.
The focus of this appointment will be to maintain the delivery of an oral surgery service, and head and neck surgical dermatology service, to local patients. 

Main duties of the job

The post-holder will join a well-established team within the Maxillofacial Unit, where we provide a compehensive Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Service, including Head & Neck Cancer (primary surgery takes place at the adjacent Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth), orthognathic surgery, salivary gland surgery, thyroid and parathyroid surgery. In addition there is a large head and next skin cancer service.

The clinical duties of the post include the following:
Out-patient OMFS clinic (new and follow-up)
Out-patient Minor Oral Surgery and Skin Surgery
In-patient Oral Surgery, Maxillofacial Surgery and Skin Surgery
Emergency and Trauma Surgery on CEPOD

The postholder will be a qualified dentist with postgraduate experience in secondary care OMFS; a medical qualification and experience in the management of head and neck skin cancer would be additional benefit.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post-holder will be expected to work with consultant colleagues to provide a comprehensive oral surgery service. They will be expected to carry out common oral surgery procedures, and head and neck surgical dermatology procedures under LA and GA without supervision. They will be expected to undertake emergency and trauma surgery. They will contribute to the supervision of junior staff within the department. They will contribute to clinical teaching within the department.

On Call Commitment: No regular on-call commitment but the post-holder will be encouraged and supported to contribute to the middle-grade on-call rota on occasion when rota gaps appear, and a regular on-call commitment may be expected in the future (with appropriate job planning)

Experience/ Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Basic medical degree and /or basic dental degree
  • Full GMC and/or GDC registration with a licence to practice
  • • Four years post-graduation, with two years in the relevant specialty
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree
  • Appropriate specialist qualification
  • CBCT reporting qualification

Clinical Skills and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experienced in the diagnosis and management of all common oral surgical, oral medicine and head and neck skin conditions
  • Experience of management of Oral and Maxillofacial trauma

Knowledge

Desirable criteria
  • Breadth of experience in and outside specialty

  • Experience and ability to work in multi-professional teams
  • Understanding of: NHS / Clinical governance / Resource constraints
