NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor

Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic doctor to join our existing clinical team in the Comprehensive Stroke Service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton.

This is an exciting time to join our team as we have recently moved to our new purpose-built Stroke Unit, are in the process of expanding our thrombectomy service and are involved in the reconfiguration of stroke services across the region.

As well as gaining experience in all aspects of acute stroke care, the post holder will be expected to be involved in a range of departmental work including education, further developing our successful stroke simulation course, quality improvement, audit work and governance meetings.

Applications are invited from qualified medical practitioners at registrar level who are enthusiastic to develop their skills in stroke medicine and simulation training. This is not a training post, but clinical experience and supervision will be similar to SpRs. There is currently no on-call associated with this role, but there may be opportunities to expand the role to include cover at the weekends, particularly supporting the TIA service.

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties of the post:

•    Attendance at acute stroke calls
•    Day to day care of patients on HASU
•    TIA clinics
•    Opportunity to develop leadership skills chairing MDTs
•    Gain experience in acute stroke treatments such as thrombolysis and thrombectomy
•    Development of the stroke simulation training programme

This post will give the successful applicant the opportunity to develop skills around all aspects of stroke care from the hyperacute stage including thrombolysis and thrombectomy through to rehabilitation and discharge. There will be the opportunity to contribute regularly to TIA clinics. The stroke unit has an active governance and teaching programme which the post holder will be expected to contribute towards. The applicant will have 2 PAs per week dedicated to supporting the simulation training service. This time will be used to develop a monthly multidisciplinary stroke sim teaching day, as well as in-situ stroke simulation. The post holder will support delivery of the National UK and ROI stroke simulation when it rotates to Brighton. They will also support the development of the wider Trust simulation programme.

The Specialty Doctor will be an integral member of the team providing continuity of care on HASU. The specific timetable will be adapted to the applicant’s experience and training needs. The post holder will be expected to attend stroke calls (gaining experience of thrombolysis and thrombectomy), care for patients on the ward
