Job overview
Are you an ambitious and experienced Consultant Psychologist ready to take the next step in your career in an environment where you will be supported to grow & develop? A unique & exciting opportunity has arisen as part of our transformation of urgent and acute care. This new post is for a Multi Professional Approved Clinician within our mental health services in East Sussex.
Opportunity open to either
Consultant Practitioner Psychologists who have achieved Approved Clinician status. Applicants will be already approved by the appropriate authority to act as an Approved Clinician in England for the purposes of the Mental Health Act 1983 (as amended 2007). You will be appointed at an 8D.
Or Consultant Practitioner Psychologists who can commit to training to become an Approved Clinician. MPACs in dedicated training roles will receive full support to undertake the 18 month training & completion of the portfolio in readiness for submission to the local approvals panel. The MPAC in training roles are banded at 8b (practitioners already working at 8C will maintain their 8C grade & terms and conditions for the duration of their training). On completion of the programme & following successful approval the MPAC in training will progress to a band 8D Multi-Professional Approved and Responsible Clinician post.
The post holder will work into the inpatient & urgent care pathway in Hastings.

Main duties of the job
Qualified Clinician:
Lead in a specialist field of clinical and professional practice: namely as a Consultant Psychologist / Responsible Clinician. To be responsible, in collaboration with operational management and multi-professional colleagues, for the development and implementation of this specialist field of practice/training/research, within locality and across the Trust. To carry out responsibilities as job planned within the service as a consultant practitioner psychologist and approved / responsible clinician.

Trainee Clinician:
This is a 12 - 18 month Approved Clinician (AC) training post that forms part of the very senior clinical workforce. The post holder is expected to be at consultant level capability as defined by the HEE document. The postholder will develop the eight core competencies of an Approved Clinician (AC), accessing support from a variety of professional backgrounds, divisions and organisations. This broadening of the trainee’s knowledge and clinical experience is vital towards submitting a successful portfolio of evidence to the regional MHA Approvals Panel. AC status must be achieved within 18 months of commencing in role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Qualified:
- Hold a specialist clinical caseload and maintain a very high / statutory degree of clinical responsibility for patients on caseload, while providing consultant level clinical services within a designated care group to a group of patients who may or may not be managed under the Mental Health Act 1983.
- Provide a very senior / overall clinical leadership function to MDT colleagues and others within a designated care group, for designated patients, as a Consultant Psychologist and in a statutory clinical lead role, as Responsible Clinician.
- Provide expert guidance, advice, consultation and supervision to own professional group and to MDT colleagues, and patient.
- Contribute and lead on organisational, policy and clinical service developments and utilise advanced skills in research, quality improvement, outcome measurement, audit, teaching, training and lecturing to support evidence-based practice and high standards of service delivery within the designated care group, completing research and quality improvement projects as required, and supporting others to do so.
Trainee:
§ Being accountable for their own professional practice in the delivery of highly specialist care to patients with severe and enduring mental health conditions or learning disabilities; this may include psychiatric, physical and social co-morbidity and involve significantly challenging behaviours (with risk of physical aggression).
§ Planning individual patient care and where appropriate co-ordinating care within the MDT and external agencies.
§ Undertaking the role of Trainee Approved Clinician for an identified client group incorporating the eight clinical competencies below, as per Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) guidance:
1. A comprehensive understanding of the roles, legal responsibilities and key functions of the AC and RC.
2. An applied knowledge of the legal and policy framework. This includes mental health and all other relevant legislation, codes of practice, policy and guidance and relevant NICE guidance.

Training & Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Professionally qualified mental health professionals in one of the following groups: 1. A Practitioner Psychologist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council 2. A Nurse, registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council as practicing within the mental health or learning disability fields 3. An Occupational Therapist, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council 4. A Social Worker, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council 5. A master’s degree or doctoral degree qualification, within the candidate’s professional field or related therapy discipline or equivalent level qualification
- A postgraduate certificate or diploma, within the candidate’s professional field or related therapy discipline (or equivalent, such as the Higher Specialist Award in Social Work).
- Be prepared to undertake a specific qualification in service areas where the Application form role is required. For this particular post, it is not essential to be an independent prescriber, or to become an independent prescriber prior to achieving AC approval.
- Commitment to undertake AC training including attendance at AC Portfolio Workshops and Post Graduate Certificate in Professional Practice in Law: Mental Health (Approved Clinician Preparatory Programme)
- Evidence of continuing professional development
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of liaison and joint working with statutory, voluntary and private sector agencies. Working with patients as covered by the Mental Health Act, Mental Capacity Act, MHA Code of Practice Providing clinical and professional leadership to other qualified and non-qualified members of the profession. Managing multi-agency service delivery models. Autonomous clinical decision making Experience of managing change e.g. implementing new models of care, new pathways, service development activities Undertaking research activity Goal setting and delivery of targets within deadlines. Working well under pressure, within tight deadlines, and producing good quality results Undertaking mental health assessments incorporating biological, psychological, cultural and social perspectives Leading formulation, review and treatment within the context of the multidisciplinary team Assessing capacity to consent to treatment
