If you like the sound of that, then come and join our team.

Job overview

This is a novel and exciting post that is available from August 2024 for up to one year.  Our Medical Education team has recently completed an ambitious programme of change, with investment in its consultant resource, administrative support, faculty development, simulation technology, leadership development and psychotherapy teaching.  The post-holder will be an important contributor to this programme of work and, there will be plenty of room for innovation and leadership within the role.

The post-holder will work closely with Dr Lisa Page, Dr Alice Brooke and other members of the Undergraduate Medical Education team to deliver our year 3 and year 5 BSMS courses.  We are particularly interested in hearing from doctors with an interest in simulation, technology enhanced learning, or communications teaching, as we continue to develop these areas over the next year.

Main duties of the job

The main purpose of the post is to support senior leaders in SPFT Medical Education to deliver an exciting and inspiring undergraduate psychiatry teaching programme to year 3 and year 5 BSMS medical students.

Clinical duties will be in Sussex and will be negotiated with the successful applicant depending on previous experience, interests and clinical need.  There will be a separate clinical supervisor for the clinical component of the job.

The post is typically split as follows:

  • 50% of time is spent in clinical practice, most likely on one of our inpatient units.
  • 35% - 40% of time will be spent supporting the medical education team with the development and delivery of year 3 and year 5 medical student teaching.
  • 10% of time will be spent participating in the trust-wide postgraduate training programme for trainees.
  • For interested and committed candidates, up to 5% of time may be spent on studying for the BSMS PGCert in Medical Education.

Working for our organisation

SPFT provides clinical teaching and training in Psychiatry for over 400 medical students per year from Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS).  BSMS students undertake clinical placements in Psychiatry in year 3 and in year 5, enabling us to set strong clinical foundations in year 3 and then prepare our students for full clinical practice in year 5.

BSMS is a highly successful, modern medical school that is consistently popular with students and has a good track record of producing graduates who go into careers in Psychiatry https://www.bsms.ac.uk/undergraduate/index.aspx. BSMS also has strong Medical Education and Neuroscience departments that support and foster innovative research and modern teaching.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The post would suit someone intending a career in Psychiatry, who has completed their Core Training in Psychiatry and is post-MRCPsych - in other words a CT3+ or HST level trainee.  However, we would also consider trainees at a more junior point in their training, for example someone who has completed Foundation Training only or who has completed a core training scheme in Psychiatry but not achieved MRCPsych. In summary, we are looking for a keen and dedicated educator who is seeking to spend time in a non-training position to develop their skills in medical education and work on their portfolio before applying for the next stage in their training.
