We are looking to recruit an experienced Band 6 nurse to join our team at the Mill View Hospital Place of Safety (POS).  The POS consists of a secure outdoor space, separate accommodation, assessment and an office space.

The POS nurse is responsible for the day-to-day care of any person in the POS, irrespective of if they are detained under s135,136 or if the POS is formally closed to accommodate a patient who is either detained or informal. The POS nurse is responsible for all aspects of the persons care; e.g. ensuring medication is administered, meals are provided, the escalation of any concerns to the on call SHO / AMHP team, agreeing to, and manage, any visitors, arranging follow up MHA assessments, giving due consideration to cultural and any other needs (e.g. chaperoning), and management of risk.

This post offers the Trust's £4,000 Incentive for band 5-7 Nurses & Practitioners, as well as a relocation package up to a maximum of £8,000 (subject to terms and conditions).

This position would be open to an experienced Band 6 Nurse looking for new opportunities for growth and development.

This role would give you excellent experience and a firm foundation in assessment while in a safe environment and in interventions for a variety of mental health conditions. You would be working within a Mental Health hospital with 2 acute wards, 1 PICU, 1 older adult ward and 1 dementia ward. You would also work closely with the crisis team in facilitating the correct outcome for patients that come in to the POS.

The role will involve co-ordinating MHA assessments, liaising with Sussex Police, the approved mental health practitioner teams, and the local community mental health teams with regards to section 136 and Section 135 Mental Health Act assessments. It will also involve the delivery of focused clinical interventions prior to the Mental Health Act assessment with a view to reducing the use of the Mental Health Act and reducing the need for admissions.

  • Undertake assessments of individuals with complex mental health presentations, including those service users presenting with higher levels of risk. To develop in collaboration with the service user their care plan and their recovery plan.
  • Offer specialist nursing assessment and advice where required.
  • Assess and manage on going risks as identified during the assessment, ensuring that this is done in collaboration with the service user and carers. To regularly review risk factors and make changes to the management of them as necessary. 
  • Provide supervision of junior staff and trainees where appropriate.
  • Regularly take charge of the clinical environment over a span of duty
  • Deliver brief focused interventions to reduce the use of the Mental Health Act and reduce the need for admission. 

The POS nurse will also provide unit coordination support in addition to the POS nurse role:

  • In hours redirect any queries from ward staff to the relevant NIC, W/M or matron.
  • Redirect out of hours walk-in enquiries (member of the public / known service user) to MHRRS, Haven, A+E etc, or provide brief support and signposting as appropriate
  • Provide an overview of hospital wide staffing and support ward nurses to complete relevant forms and follow correct processes to manage any vacancies.
  • Provide assistance to the bed manager out of hours (i.e. have a discussion with ward staff if the bed manager is unable to contact them via the phone system).
  • Out of hours: Ensure taxi usage is agreed via the on-call manager (Dockets are kept in the matron's office).
  • Maintain an awareness of all incidents, whether attended or not, during their shift.
  • Provide and/or ensure escalation of care / support to injured staff or service users.
  • Monitor all seclusion and calm room use, ensuring adherence to policy / IR1 completion.
  • Attend planned PMVA incidents / respond to other incidents including seclusion or calm room reviews to provide senior nursing support and oversight. 
  • Provide managerial support in the absence of Ward Managers/Charge Nurses, with follow up, via email etc, to W/M's.
  • Chair the PMVA huddles.
  • Produce and circulate the Mill View handover report

  • Experience of partnership working within and across various statutory and non-statutory teams and agencies
